The Medical Renaissance Group aims to bring together the global community of doctors ,Health Practitioners, Nurses and the community to lobby their respective governments for the creation of a healing culture which places priority on the health of the individual rather than on the illness of the individual. In this respect, it supports preventative, nutritional and mind / body medicine and sees healing as being a unique partnership between the doctor and the patient. Now is your opportunity to join a Global Medical Movement which with your support can reverse the Global crisis in Health,. We must be the change we wish to see in the World .Illness caused by drugs or technological intervention is such that the treatment of illness is now the third commonest cause of death in Western Society. (Journal of the American Medical Association)and the primary cause of death and disability in the US ( DR Gary Null).Sixteen per cent of patients who enter hospital either die or come out worse than when they went in. (Medical Journal of Australia 1995). The health of the public hinges on three legs of a stool. These legs are release of stress, a sense of mastery of ones own life, and support of the community. This concept of health promotion was pioneered by the First International Conference of Health Promotion which was held in Ottawa in November 1986. At that time, the Conference was a response to a growing world expectation for a new global public health movement. This charter emphasized promotion of healthy lifestyles prevention of disease increasing rehabilitation and community health services.

The Medical Renaissance Movement aims to lobby for a form of medicine which is integrative and health giving and gives individuals the opportunity to take responsibility for their own lives and the opportunity to arrest the development of degenerative disease or prevent it altogether. The Medical Renaissance Movement aims to create an organization that truly supports the interests of medical practitioners and the patients.
Rapid advances are occurring in Western medicine. GPs, by their very nature are the professionals on the coalface, and have a responsibility to make accurate diagnoses. We believe that this government has no understanding of the life sciences, and it seems, has no respect for medical professionalism. There are severe flaws in our medical system.
The doctor, as a confidant and a friend and healer, will be a thing of the past, when by the very nature of the current Medical system, we are forced to ignore the underlying causes of the illnesses, with which our patients present. Instead most Doctors give band aid pharmaceuticals, which by their very nature, have many side effects. Although patients come along to see us with a cold or a request for a work certificate, or depression for which we are taught to give drugs, more usually, there are underlying conditions which need to be addressed, such as, isolation from the community, poor nutrition, life style, stress, obesity, pre-diabetes, and disturbances of thyroid, toxicity and immune problems.
These diagnoses require careful evaluation and time spent with the patient which is comproised by finacial considerations and the current Medical Training model. Governments have no knowledge of the health sciences and yet many want ancillary health professionals untrained in diagnosis to take over the role of the GP as Gate Keepers. If this happens, the health of the population will be severely compromised. Would you trust a car mechanic to service an aeroplane, or a brick layer to design houses? Our modern world is plagued by degenerative disease, which is the result of faulty nutrition, and being overweight, which is aggravated by a lack of exercise, smoking and eating refined processed foods. Australia spent more than $71.4 billion in 2005–06 on processed food, and processed food is hardly nutritious. ( Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ).
Generally, the food we eat is too high in fat, salt and sugar. Even fruits and vegetables are polluted with fertilizer as they are grown on a base of nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus, which lack essential nutrients. This is one of the reasons we need vitamin supplements. Left unchecked, free radicals produced by these foods in the body, contribute to aging and age-related disease including cancer. The implementation of Preventive Health principles can save billions in healthcare costs, and these dollars can then be reinvested into further research in nutritional and environmental medicine. Studies show that 60% of consumers spend 4 billion dollars annually on natural products, supplements and natural remedies. Health care costs escalate because of band aid treatment of disease with costlytechnology and drugs to the extent that 70% of health money is spent on treating chronic disease.
The most effective doctors understand the healing process. They understand that our beliefs, spiritual values and relationships have a profound affect on our physical health . When we cope effectively with stress we overcome the stressful situation’s potentially health damaging potential. Effective coping consists of optimistic appraisal, taking action, and using exercise, relaxation and meditation to have a clear relaxed mind. This is why we recommend that our patients to do meditation, relaxation, yoga, t’ai Chi, Pilates and the like.
Good doctors also see themselves as therapeutic agents eliciting the placebo response. The magnitude of the placebo response is about 35% to 50% and is really an expression of the person’s belief in themselves. The placebo effect is a marshalling of our self healing ability. It is the life force within each of us, or the healer within.
To significantly reduce disease, we must slow the aging process, according to a team of experts who published their conclusion online in the British Medical Journal on July 8. Due to a greater life expectancy in developed countries, the increased incidence of diseases related to aging has resulted in a dramatic rise in health care costs. Professor Olshansky and colleagues note that if an extended life span is combined with health, it could result in a number of economic, social, and other benefits, which they call “the longevity dividend. They propose increased funding for studies that will increase our knowledge concerning the relationship of aging to such diseases as type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and most cancers, in addition to research into the processes that control aging itself.
In the Editorial, Evidence-based advocacy in the Medical Journal Australia MJA 2008; 188 (12): 684-685 states that: m ost doctors now seem to accept that their expertise should include knowledge about social determinants of illness and access to care and that, even when they are not personally involved, it is important that the profession provides a responsible expert voice on such determinants in public debate
There are tremendous advances in Complimentary and Alternative medicine occurring in Europe and the United States spear headed for example by University of California, and the Harvard Medical School.
It is well known that adverse affects from pharmaceutical drugs, or illness caused by drugs or technological intervention, is such that the treatment of such illnesses is now the fourth most common cause of death in western society.
An article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) as far back as 2000, showed that contrary to doctors being the panacea of patients’ medical problems, it is in fact doctors who are the third leading cause of death in the US, killing 250,000 people every year [JAMA, 26 July 2000; 284(4): 483-5]. The Quality in Australian Health Care Study (QAHCS), published in the Australian Medical Journal in 1995, reported that 16.6% of hospital admissions were associated with an iatrogenic patient injury, termed an adverse event (AE) This is equivalent to 18,000 people dying each year because of medical mistakes and also equivalent to additional hospital bed-days costing in excess of $800 million dollars per year (The Medical Journal of Australia MJA 2006; 185 (4): 213-216 )
The medical system, in Australian and Western society, functions as an anonymous, alienating machine, in which the hospital is structured like a factory, in which patients become institutionalized `. Doctors are taught a bio-medical model, which denies the innate healing capacity of the body and sees the human being as a machine which can be fixed by giving a pharmaceutical chemical drug which has many toxic side effects. Most of the pharmaceutical compendium ( MIMS) which Doctors consult for prescribing drugs consists of details of the toxic side effects of the drugs prescribed. The New Medicine, indeed, encompasses a healing approach, which sees the individual as mind, body, and spirit and also as an aspect of community, environment and culture. For example, because globally we live in a political system motivated by fear and scarcity, there is no reason why we should not extrapolate these as being some of the causes of the enormous degree of cardiovascular disease and depression and stress seen in society.
As Doctors, we need to be aware of ourselves as healing agents, and therefore also agents of political change.
Stresses that doctors, particularly GPs are under include
Ø Threat of litigation
Ø Too much work and limited time
Ø Inadequate remuneration
Ø Difficult to manage patients
Ø Paperwork
Ø Intrusion on family life
Ø Time pressure to see patients
Ø Unrealistic community expectations
Within the current system) GPs are the meat in the sandwich. They feel compelled to provide their patients with the drugs and antibiotics that the patients call for and yet cannot give adequate care which requires a preventative, nutritional and lifestyle approach as they are not trained to do this.
Doctors have to produce band-aid approaches which serve the financial needs of the pharmaceutical companies who wish to promote their latest drug.
. THE MEDICAL RENAISSANCE MOVEMENT
www.medicalrenaissance.com has the following targets:
1. To gain recognition for GPs that they be recognized as “specialists” in primary care and the conductors of the primary care orchestra. 2. The initial consultation should be a long consultation and should be rewarded appropriately. It is the ideal opportunity to take a full history and examination and build rapport between doctor and patient. The cornerstone of primary health care is to promote the empowerment of the primary care physician and the doctor-patient relationship. The consultation should also be based on the empowerment of the patient to take responsibility for their health.
3. To lobby for greater freedom and greater remuneration for GPs.
4. To promote the primary care physician to play a more fundamental role in the development of the future course of primary health care. The power behind health care initiatives is the government. It is evident that the government and the specialized bodies representing the future of general practice do not adequately represent the views of GPs in a system which is becoming more and more based on computerisation, data storage of records, public health issues and the formation of strict protocols. This is because the government and the representative bodies for GPs are not at the frontline and are not involved in the practice of medicine in every day life.
5.To promote a hospital culture which is based on healing, nutrition, and nurturing rather than compartmentalization, specialisation and dehumanization where collateral damage in terms of iatrogenic disease is considered to be unavoidable.
6. To promote an overall holistic view of medicine within the context of mind, body, nutritional and environmental medicine, placing an emphasis on preventative care and lifestyle change.
7. The Group proposes to lobby for a New Medicine- an integrated health system which is based on communication between all specialties of doctors as well as other health professionals with the prime aim of giving members of the public the opportunity to heal themselves by using the latest understanding of body - mind medicine, sychoneuroimmunology, nutritional, environmental and preventive medicine as well as accessing the very best of complementary medicine. There is a need to change attitudes and mindset so that we have healing in the broadest possible sense not only of the individual, but society, and the environment.
8. To create public awareness about the pros and cons of the current medical system based on the biomedical model and the need for a more inclusive form of medicine which enables them to take more responsibility for their illnesses and also prevent degenerative disease.
9. To create the situation whereby doctors are able to have support groups and support from peers, so that they do not feel isolated or alone when put in difficult therapeutic situations, or have personal problems. In other words, to provide “healing” for the healer.
It is the General Practitioner who should be intimately involved in parameters of health defined by the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion from which has been derived the World Health Authority objectives Health for All by the Year 2000. This includes; Promotion of healthy lifestyles Prevention of preventable disease Increasing rehabilitation and community health services
