The first step to take is the enjoy smaller and more frequent meals and snacks. By eating smaller more often meals and snacks you’ll be better able to keep your energy levels on an even keel and avoid spikes and drops in blood sugar levels. By eating the right combination of the foods, your body will be better equipped to work consistently through the slump times of the day (typically around 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM). So instead of eating those high sugar foods enjoy some of the foods on the list below.

Fresh fruit, especially skinned fruit like pears, apples, peaches and oranges are excellent sources of fiber and vitamins. For example, peaches provide dietary fiber, Vitamin B3 (niacin), potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C. Vitamin B3 is important for providing energy for cell tissues to growth. Potassium helps to maintain electrical stability of the cells in your heart, nervous system and is vital for muscle growth. Vitamin B12 is important in red cell formation, metabolizing fat and protein and nerve function.

Raisins are a low-cholesterol, low-sodium and healthy snack that contains potassium, copper, iron and phosphorus. By mixing in raisins with low-fat yogurt you’ll also enjoy vitamin B12 (riboflavin) and vitamin B12 with are high amounts of calcium. This compound helps with strong bones and teeth and is key to normal function of the heart and muscles.

Keep a bag of dried cherries in your desk draw or replace the candy in the candy jar on your desk with dried cherries. Dried cherries are a source of potassium, calcium, vitamin C and fiber. Dried cherries is a good source of melatonin. In fact, tart cherries are one of naturals leading sources of the naturally occurring melatonin. This compound helps to maintain the body’s natural rhythmic pattern. Helping to get a more restful sleep at night and be more wakeful during the day. In addition, tart cherries help to maintain healthy joint function.

Combine dried apricots, almonds and dried cherries. Apricots and almonds are excellent source of vitamin A, iron, fiber and protein. They are low in sodium and cholesterol, while apricots and cherries are good sources of potassium. Vitamin A in apricots contributes to bone growth, healthy vision, reproduction and helps to fight off infection.

Enjoy some sesame sticks and baby carrots provide significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B, beta carotene, iron, potassium, copper and fiber. Beta carotene helps to protect the body, while vitamin A is good for healthy skin, night vision and respiratory issues. Folate (vitamin B9) helps in forming red blood cells and break down protein, helps cell growth and division.

Finally, enjoy some peanut butter on whole grain crackers. This is an excellent source of protein, iron, niacin, and fiber. Peanut butter on celery or over an apple are classic peanut butter snacks. Both of these combinations have good staying power, while the celery is stuffed with numerous vitamins, minerals and is high in fiber. Also, low-fat string cheese is a good quick source of protein and calcium. They come in easy-to-carry individual servings and you can add a piece of fresh fruit for extra fiber.
