Owning a home isn’t cheap. You’ll have to pay for a mortgage, property taxes, utility bills, and many more expenses. One of the major expenses you’ll face is home appliances, which can be quite costly. The previous owner may have left some or all of their appliances for you, but if they didn’t or if those appliances are old or worn out, you may need to look for new appliances. If you’re buying multiple appliances at once, you may be dealing with a significant investment. Thankfully, there are strategies you can use to save when it comes to finding appliances at affordable prices. Below are a few different ideas.

Haggling

While you may be aware that it’s smart to haggle on the price of a car, what you may not know is that you can do the same for appliances at major big box retailers or even smaller stores. The reason why you may be able to negotiate on the price of an appliance is because these stores need to move out old inventory. If coming down a certain amount will move out that old stock, they may be willing to give you a deal. Just remember that if they’re not willing to haggle, you shouldn’t force the issue.

Online Liquidation Sales

A second option you may want to utilize is using online liquidation sales . Liquidation occurs when a store’s inventory is sold at a significant discount. Some of these items are unloaded onto websites for much cheaper than they were originally. You could see reductions in price as big as 50 percent or more.

Buying Refurbished

Another option is buying an appliance that has been refurbished. Refurbished typically refers to items that were returned for whatever reason and then quality checked and fixed by the original manufacturer before being put back on the market. In many cases, refurbished appliances are just as good as new but come with significant discounts.

Floor Models

Floor models are appliances that are kept out of the box and assembled at retailers so consumers can get a better idea of what they would be buying. As such, they tend to already have some slight wear and tear due to being handled while on the floor. In many cases, you can purchase floor models from retailers with a decent discount of 20 percent or so.

Sales

Lastly, you can save money by choosing to shop at the right time for your appliances when a sale is going on. The most significant sales for appliances are during the holiday season, especially on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, end of the year sales when retailers try to move out old stock could produce significant discounts as well. Many retailers offer sales on holiday weekends throughout the year.

Utilizing one of these strategies can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on new appliances. There are, of course, other choices like buying used or trading in old appliances for a discount. Whatever the case, with a little strategy, you can make home appliances a lot more affordable.
