The first seven minutes were the hardest part. My fingers hurt, and I wanted to go outside and play with my friends. But after just a few minutes, something special started to happen. I worked past the hard part, my attention was activated, and I just kept practicing, every day, no days off. What my teacher knew was that I had an attention span that would last thirty to forty minutes and that if he could get me through the first seven minutes, and if I did it every day, no days off, the rest would take care of itself—and it did. I developed the habit of daily applying myself to my goal, and I went on to become an excellent guitar player.
