I have spent the past 14 years of my life involved in 12 step and non 12 step based treatment environments including; addiction treatment centers and sober livings. While many will offer scientific and medical approaches in defining the various characteristics of addiction and mental health disorders, I come from a more experiental, practical and hands-on point of view that applies to the thinking mind of the "alcoholic" brain.
Whether it is substance abuse/chemical dependency, alcoholism, gambling, sex, eating disorders, etc., they all share a common pattern of thought and information processing that is unique to people in these arenas. More often than not, traditional reasoning and logic will not suffice in trying to unravel the reasons as to why people with addictive thought patterns continue to engage in such destructive behavior. It is commonly agreed that the best addiction specialists are those whom have personally experienced and persevered from the horrors of addiction.
Through my own personal struggles and experiences in working within this field, and having gained the insight into the various methods and approaches in helping those to gain a new awareness by unraveling the relationship between impulses, thoughts and actions, I am blessed to have such an opportunity to witness huge emotional/behavioral shifts in those I work with. The mind of an addict is complex and built upon a variety of clinical and personal factors, however, the greatest success of recovery as I've personally witnessed is through various personal, interactive & experiental approaches that focus more on the individual and less of scientific data.
Today, I work with a company by the name of Sober Nexus - http://www.sobernexus.com - which offers a new type of national search technology for those seeking the services of addiction treatment centers, sober living homes and other ancillary addiction treatment related services.
