Over the years, other coaches engaged him as a paid mentor. Many have since become career industry leaders as well.In December 2007, Netshare , an organization that supports executives seeking positions above $100K, invited him to be one of a select group of resources for their many members. He conducts regular teleseminars and provides feedback on career strategies for executives who are members of Netshare.In January, 2007, Kennedy Information , a world leader in supporting recruiters, asked Don to join their elite Editorial Advisory Board so their thousands of clients can benefit from his ideas .Don has been regular presenter and featured speaker at professional conventions for more than 15 years. In April 2001, he traveled to Washington to brief 150 career professionals on the results of his research into the latest hiring trends. The next year, he wrote, and won overwhelming support for, the Career Management Alliance’s Code of Ethics .In early 2003, the President of Career Management Alliance sought him out to give a special, all-day workshop on very advanced interview techniques to more than a dozen professional career coaches. Just a few days later, he presented a one-hour workshop on managing a career coaching practice to attendees at the Career Management Alliance Annual Conference. The President of the Phoenix Career Group invited him to her Senior Planning Summit in October 2003. Don has appeared as a speaker at the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches 2003 Annual Convention, and a judge in their “The Best Résumé Contest.” His workshop on advanced interviewing techniques was so well received at the Career Management Alliance’s Annual Conference that he was asked by the organization’s president to repeat it April 2004. At the same conference, he presented an hour and a half workshop on building solid business plans—when the planned speaker cancelled at the very last minute. His teleseminars on setting proper pricing structures was so well received, his colleagues asked him to repeat it. Also in 2004, he helped business owners attract, hire, and retain the best employees , and worked extensively with Huntingdon College as they strengthen their career development center. In June he spoke, by invitation, to the Alabama Telecommunications Managers’ Association. In October, he was the leadoff speaker to career professionals about advanced résumé writing techniques at the Convention of the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches. Don has appeared on two “ Community Focus” programs and was a guest on “ Panorama” for the Southeastern Public Radio Network. He has been seen on Alabama Public Television’s “Alabama@Work.” John Heed, of the Career Journal (part of the Wall Street Journal), quoted him in his article “Executive-Level Résumés Require Special Attention.” In the spring of 2004, he recorded several career-centered programs for later broadcast in the Rochester, New York area. April of 2005 found Don moderating a panel of career professionals at the Career Management Alliance Conference and beginning work on a new certification program in interviewing skills. His presentation at the CMI Conference in April 2007 was among the highest rated. By March of 2008, he was quoted in an article about job fairs published in the Washington Post.Don uses his long experience in curriculum design and teaching to offer workshops covering many subjects. In August 2005, he addressed the Montgomery Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama.He has consistently put his 26 years on active duty to work serving military professionals transitioning into the private and public sectors. In 1998, the Air Force asked him to conduct career change seminars for senior officers who were approaching retirement. This 20-hour course far exceeded atteendees’ expectations. The Air Force sought him out again in May 2006 to guide full colonels in their transition into civilian careers. The 14 senior officers who attended the course lobbied to have Don return for a third time in the Spring of 2007 and the class size has more than doubled. His most recent Executive Transition Assistance Program workshop got rave reviews from full colonels in February, 2008.He has presented workshops organizations such as AMERICORPS/VISTA, The Institute of Internal Auditors, and The American Association of Military Comptrollers. He has taught as part of the Montgomery, Alabama Area Chamber of Commerce’s Entrepreneurial University, guiding new business owners in finding, hiring, and retaining top quality people. To help college students transition to the world of business, he conducted workshops at Auburn University at Montgomery, Huntingdon College, and Troy University. Since 1998, he has guided seminars to help growing companies find and keep the best employees. And for the last eight years, he has been an invited presenter at more than a dozen career fairs in Montgomery and Atlanta.
Professional recognition…
Don and his company have been recognized soon after he opened the doors in 1993. The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce recognized The McLean Group as one of the 30 hottest new companies in Montgomery for 1995 and again in 1996.In April 2004, Don was one of very few to be featured in the “Pinnacle Professionals” series of articles in the journal of the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches. In February 2005, he was one, of only two in the industry, to be interviewed for an article in Résumé Writers’ Digest on the latest trends in the careers industry.
Contributions to the literature…
By early-2008, authors had included Don’s work in more than 53 collections of the best résumés and cover letters published in America, Canada, and Australia. Krannich and Banis, referring to Don’s contributions to their latest book, said this: “His (Don’s) examples represent some of today’s most powerful employer-oriented résumés. These résumés speak the language of employers loud and clear.”Susan Britton Whitcomb, the author of Résumé Magic , sought him out to improve her recent book on interviewing techniques. She called on his help again for her latest work, Job Search Magic . The Spotlight , the journal of the Professional Association of Résumé Writers prints one of his articles each month, The Résumé Writers’ Digest , and Career Planning and Adult Development Journal have also featured his articles. He is a regular contributor to the Career Management Alliance Newsletter and a former columnist for AviationCareers.net. In August 2005, he was asked by the Executive Director of the Association of Career Professionals of Canada to contribute to their newsletter.In 1998, Mr. Orlando was selected to help form the Career Management Alliance (now the Career Management Alliance), a virtual organization that builds networks between professionals in every aspect of the careers industry. He directed three of its research studies. He also serves as an instructor in CMA’s Entrepreneurial Eagles program for career professionals from across the nation. Don is also sought as a consultant to help organizations like the Council for Leadership in Alabama Schools and the Alabama Retail Association design the right systems to attract and retain the best team members.
Service to the community…
For several years, Don’s pro bono program extended to the prisons of Alabama where he helped inmates plan for their return to society. In September 2005, Don took a leading role with an industry-wide consortium of professional career organizations to help job seekers displaced by Hurricane Katrina get settled in the work force again. His guidelines helped shape the effort that coordinated volunteer efforts of career coaches, résumé writers, and career transition professionals. In October 2005, his pro bono work included building a new program the Veterans’ Administration will use to prepare its hospital residents to transition to full time work.
