There are basically two motivation strategies that people use. Moving away from or moving towards something. We have all developed this on a deep biological and physical level. Most of the time one of these will be more dominant. Motivation direction is a mental program that has a great effect on our lives. These are very different ways of getting motivated and both can be useful in different situations.

The question is how has your strategy worked for you?

Think of the things you do not want and make a list (These are the things you want to move away from)How do you feel after making the list?

Think of the things you do want and make a list (These are the things you want to move towards)How do you feel after making the list?

Ask yourself…How will moving away from the things you do not want make a difference in your life?

Ask yourself…How will moving towards the things you want make a difference in your life?

When you look at these motivation strategies you will find that people with a dominant moving towards strategy is more goal orientated and people with a moving away from strategy is more inclined to do problem solving. When used in the appropriate situations either strategy can be effective.
