I’m sure, you like me have in your daily life management planner a to-do list. Do you not?Well, do you have a to-be list? You know, a list of who you want to be. The type of person you really want to be. The highest version of your self? The unlimited you!

Whether it is to be more philanthropic. Patient. Knowledgeable in a certain area. Gain mastery of your thoughts. Friendly. Humorous. Attractive. Resourceful. Loving. It doesn’t matter what is on the list. It is more important that you have a list. Then, after you have the list to ask your self the all powerful question of what is important to you about ___________ on the list?

For example, what is important to you about being resourceful? Here is the process I go through when creating my to-be list:

What is important to me about being resourceful?
I feel I will be able to handle more unexpected occurrences with grace.
What is important to me about being able to handle more unexpected occurrences with grace?
I feel more in charge. More capable and in control. I will be able to share with others how to do the same.
What is important to me about feeling more in charge, capable and in control? What is important to me about being able to share this with others?
Well, as a child my parents got divorced when I was 12 and there was nothing I could do about it. It was the beginning of unexpected occurrences. So, as an adult I would feel more at peace and connected with my source of strength if I knew that I could draw upon that source to solve any challenges that arise. As a little girl in Miss Gittleman fourth grade class at the end of the school year she gave me the teacher editions of the Little Red Book, Little Green Book and Little Yellow Book. She encouraged me to teach my friends over summer break. Miss Gittleman said that she saw in me a natural desire and inclination toward teaching and sharing with others. That one act has confirmed my thirst for knowledge and desire to share what I learn with others. By the way, I did teach on our front step every day during the summer.
Admittedly, I have had a lot of practice going through this exercise so I am able to get to the core rather quickly.
Typically, it takes about seven layers to determine if the item is important enough to you to earn a spot on your to-be list.
While to do lists are very important, to be lists are equally important.
I’m curious, what would be on your to-be list?
