One of the things that I always take into consideration in a coach-client relationship and self-actualization is the word, SELF. Self-Actualization, by its very nature, is about the person, the self.

Now, before I continue, let me say something about the SELF, because for some, the self does not exist, but is a transcendent property of the ever changing phenomenon of living. I think it is in this place that the use of human language to express experience comes in. I believe in the self as my unique personhood. Self is that expression of who I am and the value that I am. The self is I, the self is the person that wakes in the morning and starts the day. That being said, the self is also a category of experience, both that which we live and that which we experience in others. In that sense the self does not exist, but as a symbol of what we see and experience. Even transcendence and change are categories of concepts derived from experience.

I try, as much as possible, to realize that everything is constantly in change, and if I could, I would try and e-prime everything because of this change, but, our conceptions and perceptions of nature, primed by our culture and ingrained in our psyche, give us a language of explanation that is not always true to that nature. Korzybski called this false-to-fact and it is something that most of us live with unless we do spend time in the contemplation and transcendence of the cultural semantic milieu of the time. That all being said about the self I always try to work from the clients map.

I believe, as did Maslow, that self-actualization is not adding something to someone; it is removing that which hinders his or her growth. Thus in this meta-coaching relationship I focus on the clients language, states, frames, meta-programs, rep-systems, etc and look for limiting beliefs toward his or her actualization. If, as Maslow stated, and as the Center of Self-Actualization Studies defines self-actualization, that for a person to actualize their highest self, they do not need to add to who they are, they have to remove that which has hindered who they are.

One of the particulars about how I work with individuals and groups for self-actualization is to look at it from a systems approach. To me, self-actualization is the freedom of the soul, the whole mind-body-emotion system to be free from all hindrances of full growth. People are a system and they live in a system. People as a general rule do follow Maslow’s hierarchy (again, general rule) and so as a general rule, those deficiency needs need to be addressed in the coaching conversation.

At the Center for Self-Actualization Studies we do primary and secondary research in as many of the components of this system as possible. Then as we come to better understand the component parts of this system, we build models of synthesis, so that in a sense, it forms a gestalt or even sometimes a new emergent property. We then take the structure of these components and apply them both theoretically and pragmatically in our course studies at the Center for Self-Actualization University. This allows the students to experience, a phenomenological approach, the self-actualization system and thus, at the very depth of the soul, actualize, on an ongoing life long process, the very core of their being.

Author's Bio:

Dr. Charles DesJardins is the founder and president of the Center for Self-Actualization Studies and The Center for Self-Actualization University.

The Center for Self-Actualization Studies is a research forum for scholarly research in Self-Actualization. The focus of the center is to integrate, accumulate, and synergize past, current, and future theories and models of self-actualization into applied self-actualization research that culminates in positive pragmatic social changes.

The Center for Self-Actualization Studies operates from a social paradigm and exists to facilitate positive social changes for the betterment of all mankind. At the current state of research it promotes the use of the latest technologies of Meta-Coaching and Neuro-Semantics to raise the level of Self-Actualization in individuals and groups.

I am currently directing the Center for Self-Actualization University. The University offers a personal development curriculum that brings the student understanding in the latest findings of quantum physics, neuroscience, biology, NLP, Neuro-Semantics, Self-Actualization Psychology, physiology, meditation, etc.

Most current university programs prepare the student for a career. The Bachelors degree, the masters degree, and even the Ph.D. prepare the student for career.

Very few Universities have the strategic goal of personal development. It is the view of the Center for Self-Actualization Studies University that until a person is operating at their best performance, that is, peak performance, they will not be operating at their best in their careers, thus, there are limits to their bachelor, master, and Ph.D. learning’s. Thus, the Center of Self-Actualization Studies University offers a very theoretical as well as practical online university program - designed for the students LIFE, their personal development and Self-Actualization.

Self-Actualization Psychology follows the lead of Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and therefore it postulates that for full development the student needs a systems approach through this Hierarchy. This curriculum is both theoretical, scientific, informative, and pragmatic. The student, upon completion of the program, will have a thorough understanding of the major components of self-actualization and will experience personal, lifelong changes.
