The Numerology, Psychology and Cosmology of Alcoholism, Gambling and Sexual Abuse

Nearly four decades ago I acquired a book entitled The Cosmic Doctrine by Dion fortune. It has been my bible of cosmology and numerology since. I have acknowledged it in my books and writing for decades, including an article where I reflect upon the state of numerology in our time (An old Practitioner Reflects Upon Numerology and the Missing Trinity). The truths of this book, which was written in 1923-24, are being confirmed recently in discoveries of modern cosmology and quantum physics.
The foundation of creation and its ongoing process is one of vibration, cycles and rhythm. Numerology is the study of vibration, cycles and rhythm. Numbers are static symbols that reflect the dance of angles and frequency of interacting agencies (people, planets, elements of nature, everything/everywhere) from the smallest particle of creation to the galactic dance of convergence and divergence.
Central to this entire dance of creation are the three simple basic movements of expansion, contraction and resolution (centrifugal-centripetal and balance), (yin-yang and Tao), etc. This is reflected in sub atomic actions, as well as in the Big Bang postulation of galactic evolution (which acknowledges the expansion and has not yet grasped the contraction phase). Ancient spiritual teachings referred this to the inhalation and exhalation (days and nights of creation) of the breath of the Creator
When using symbolism to represent this process we often use a circle with inscribed unilateral triangle. To represent the attributes of the creator we give one point of the triangle the designation of Will, the second Wisdom, and the third Love. To anthropomorphize and give these human traits we ascribe them as Father (masculine), Mother (feminine) and Child (the product or resulting state of their union). All of this symbolism and explanation is clearly presented in The Heart of Numerology by this author.
In archetypal numerology the numbers 1, 4, and 8 are associated with will. The numbers 2, 5 and 7 are associated with wisdom. And the numbers 3, 6 and 9 are associated with love. The numbers 1, 4, and 8 are numbers of action. The people who have these numbers are the doers. The numbers 2, 5, and 7 are numbers of thought. The people with these numbers are the thinkers. The numbers 3, 6, and 9 are numbers of reaction (emotion/feeling). When these numbers1, 4, and 8 are found repeatedly in the name (and particularly in the family linage) there is usually a pattern of gambling. When the numbers 2, 5, and 7 numbers are found repeatedly in the name (and particularly in the family linage) there is usually a pattern of alcoholism (drugs). The numbers 3, 6, and 9 are numbers of reaction (emotion/feeling). When these numbers are found repeatedly in the name (and particularly in the family linage) there is usually a pattern of sexual abuse and/or addiction . When considering addictions and dysfunctions we look at the dark side of the numbers. This can give the seeker or practitioner deep insight as to the origin and deep influence of unconscious conflicts leading to addictive and abusive behavior .
Gambling is rooted in the misuse of will (defiance of Divine Will) along with distorted intellect. The rebellious spark will not concede that Divine Law is impeccable and uniform. The gambler is always trying to beat the odds, to disprove the probabilities, to find flaws in the orderliness of Universal Law by hitting the long shot (a proof of deviation from perfection and inevitability). The gambler feeds repeating adrenaline highs trying to prove God (mother-father) wrong by finding a flaw in the orderliness of events. This series of negative peak experiences gives a distorted impression of being alive. The repetition and pursuit of these negative realities distracts from the opportunity to have wholesome life experiences.
The compulsive gambler resents God’s will, believing that he/she has no free will or real choice of fate. The compulsive gambler pursues unrealistic odds and inevitably loses because of a negative unconscious belief system. That belief system includes the expectation that if all is orderly and regulated I will receive nothing because I have been so bad. The gambler wants a demonstration of the Source’s generosity. However, the negative ego sabotages the possibility of positive results and reinforces the negative expectation of being rejected again!
Gambling is not just limited to excessive speculation on racing, sports , card games, the stock market or other obvious forms. A person taking compulsive, excessive risks in everyday life (job, relationships, driving, health, eating, etc.) can be a victim of the gambling syndrome. What! This guy is saying that my good eating is a form of gambling? Yes, it might be. If you are eating high cholesterol foods, or perhaps fish with consistently high mercury levels, you are gambling with your health and with your life.
The number 1 is rebellious about following the rules of acquisition and because of self-importance nurtures grandiose fantasies about hitting the big one. The 4 will gamble with work and career expecting unearned advancement or favors for services rendered. They are prone to exaggerate accomplishments or ability. They will sacrifice a steady and secure situation and put themselves and family in jeopardy in pursuit of an unrealistic dream. Eights tend to gamble with power and authority. Because they distrust authority, they justify making their own rules. They can misuse funds of their own or more likely someone else’s with ruthless abandon. Eights can throw away an esteemed position of wealth and authority, risking it all for what appears to be a more glamorous opportunity. These examples clearly do not relate to wholesome daily choices in the work place. They refer to ego driven unrealistic thinking that leads to compulsive toxic choices for the gamble and everyone who is tainted by participating in his activities.
Alcoholism (drug addiction ) is rooted in man’s search for the intoxication that comes from direct access to God’s infinite supply of wisdom and life. The act of denying self-responsibility for one’s actions resulted in numerous rationales used to justify dysfunctional and distorted behavior . Having become horrified by their deeds of darkness, many humans sought chemical spirits of earth (having missed the intoxication and joy of direct contact with source) to anesthetize their sorrow and pain. This separation leads to god like power given to the ego. Cut off from infinite wisdom the struggling human became a know-it-all with grandiose illusions of false omnipotence. The all-knowing addict is unable to alter a failing course of action because that would be admitting fallibility within self (the very thing they are trying to prove about their God).
Twos seek to manipulate and convert others into their world of negative living. They seek partnership in crime so to say. It might have been a 2 who originally coined the phrase honor among thieves. These negative 2’s are always more comfortable when they have a partner in crime so that they have justification and support (which they feel is missing from their mother-father Source). Five’s crave life and believe their world of experience is enhanced by the added potency of chemical substances which bombard the senses and keep them so overwhelmed that they do not have to deal with the true reality. They indulge and flood the senses seeking the fullness of life that has been lost in the experience of separation from Source. Sevens often retreat into a distorted self-proclaimed doctrine of living, using it to justify their erratic and unsuccessful behavior . They feed the mind with counter divine theories in a desperate attempt to find their own justification of their wounds and a replacement to the infinite wisdom that was once theirs.
Sexual and emotional abuse is rooted in the desire for love. The victim of such abuse is almost always seeking love. The perpetrator of the abuse will often insist that they were just giving love. Sexual abuse is not a loving act. Countless other motives can enter into the act of abuse; however it is almost always an act of control and power through domination. The sexual relationship is one form of human bonding that comes closest to approximating the mystical union with God. It is the seeking of mergence of the two dual polarities of humanity. The negative ego develops roadblocks to love such as jealousy, possessiveness, envy, lust, dominance, and violence to mention a few. When sexual abuse (incest, molestation, rape, harassment, predatory stalking, etc.) takes place there is always an element of emotional abuse connected with the act.
The form of emotional abuse most overlooked by society and many professional practitioners is passive abuse. Usually passive abuse is rooted to anger and takes on the form of withholding the healthy expression of love and emotion. The inner child and negative ego of the passive manipulator is very angry at not having gotten his/her share of love. This anger becomes overwhelming and the victim is frightened of the rage. The rage becomes internalized frozen and unconsciousness. It is affectionately known in my work as “passive piss”. The inner child and negative ego is saying, “you didn’t give me a thing, and I’m not going to give you anything either”. A young boy who feels he did not get love from his mother will grow up to punish the women in his life (wife, females daughters, his own inner woman, etc.) by withholding love, intimacy , encouragement, warmth and communication.
Similarly a young girl with those feelings about the father grows up to manipulate the men in her life (husband, male children, her own inner male, etc.). Passive abuse is difficult to recognize because the perpetrator does nothing. After a while the partner will react to passive manipulation by acting out. This makes the active one appear to be the villain and scapegoat, while the passive one is “looking good”. Neighbors will remark, “he’s such a nice man and she’s such a bitch”. Or, ”she’s such an angel, and he’s a real bastard”. Where there is a crazy, there is the crazy maker. The crazy maker is the passive abuser who constantly tormenting victim in the most subtle and often sadistic manner. The passive abuser but is seldom immediately recognized. Their nasty games can go on for years and keep the victim off guard because they continue to blame themselves as the source of violence and recrimination. Passive abuse is subtle, clever, and cruel. It is just as damaging, if not more so, than active abuse. It can be even more damaging perhaps because it is unseen and goes unrecognized for such a long duration that it leaves deeply embedded scars of mistrust and uncertainty of judgment remaining within its victims.
When three’s appear in the chart prominently there is often sexual abuse indicated. Three reflects the will-love combination. With a male, child incest can take on the form of emotional incest. This results when the mother did not have a healthy relationship with the father and transferred her emotional and psychological needs to the child rather than nurturing that child in a healthy manner. He takes on the role of taking care of mom rather than just being a normal healthy child and doing what normal healthy children should be doing. They wonderful and spontaneous joy of the child turns to repressed anger and among many directions can lead to frozen feelings.
Frozen three’s suggest deeply repressed anger associated with some form of abuse. Six is the archetype of codependency. Sixes are often compulsive helpers and healers. They often see others suffering without realizing their own. They become enmeshed in the most complicated toxic relationships. Codependency is addiction to a relationship. Many excellent texts are available detailing the myriad facets of this dysfunction. The abused victim often identifies with the abuser. Nine’s are very idealistic by nature and tend to see things romantically and dreamily.
Excessive euphemism, idealization, and exaggeration (misplaced idealism of the 9) about someone’s character is often an indicator of past abuse involving that person. That person is in effect lying by always speaking in positives without any connection to mentioning the dark issues. The compulsive euphemist is completely hiding from some huge lie within themselves that they are unwilling to consciously accept and resolve. For example, a child who expresses inordinately lavish praise upon their father, grandparent, or an uncle etc. Proportionate to compulsive insistence that someone was so good, is usually a clue as to how severe a negative experience (in earlier years) has been. Or, as I have shared with clients when uncovering this pattern is therapy: “the higher upon which an abused child compulsively places the perpetrator upon the pedestal, the greater the trauma of the abuse”. Notice the qualifier compulsive. That is not to say that every daughter that admires her dad is hiding some huge abusive experience. When a normal and healthy child respects and admires a parent there is always an awareness of that parent’s flaws and shortcomings as well. Failure to acknowledge any flaws or negative traits is a clear indicator that there is a hidden issue of dysfunction.
There are numerologists who say that numbers are for fun and entertainment only and should not be taken seriously. As a former practicing therapist I have found numbers very useful to identify potential hidden unconscious issues that can be brought to the surface and healed. I find that much more productive than living in the la la land of denial. Having worked with tens of thousands of people who chose at one time to live in the la la land of denial (including myself in the past), I can assure those that are read;, it is a much more fulfilling and complete life to have resolved these issues and live in awareness rather than pretending to be Ok and remaining a victim of the unconscious and hidden dark side.
