In his epic poem Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, Sri Aurobindo explores the vast field of human consciousness and development. Along the way he provides numerous references to hidden, latent powers within each of us, psychic powers, powers of mind, vital powers and powers of the physical being, powers latent and emergent, powers secret and powers revealed.

Here are just a few of the references which can whet our appetite for the exploration of the powers that dwell within our own being, that can be discovered, revealed, released and developed in our lives:

“In hands sustained by a transfiguring Might He caught up lightly like a giant’s bow Left slumbering in a sealed and secret cave The powers that sleep unused in man within.” [Book I, Canto 3, pg. 26]

“In a body obscuring the immortal Spirit A nameless Resident vesting unseen powers With Matter’s shapes and motives beyond thought And the hazard of an unguessed consequence, An omnipotent indiscernible Influence, He sits, unfelt by the form in which he lives And veils his knowledge by the groping mind.” [Book I, Canto 4, pg.68]

“In our body’s cells there sits a hidden Power That sees the unseen and plans eternity.” [Book II, Canto 5, pg. 169]

“There is a Power within that knows beyond Our knowings;” [Book V, Canto 2, pg. 397]

“A Seer, a strong Creator, is within, The immaculate Grandeur broods upon your days, Almighty powers are shut in Nature’s cells.” [Book IV, Canto 3, pg. 370]
