Dear One,

We’re in for quite the ride on the rollercoaster of Life as Trickster of Awakening Uranus moves into earthy Taurus on March 6 for a seven-year cycle of more ups and downs, twists and turns than we’ve had in a good long while. Also, in attendance on the day of this major astrological event, we have a New Moon and a Mercury Retrograde station, both in spacey Pisces, so we may be feeling: “WTF is going on?!”—in a good way, of course:).

Consequently, make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened as, just as soon as change-loving Uranus moves into safety and security-loving Taurus, disruptions—major and minor—will be kicked up a notch as our new normal.

Uranus loves to shake us up to wake us up in ways that even astrologers are hesitant to predict with exact details, as the signature of Uranus transits are sudden, unexpected windfalls and losses. So, if we anticipate an exact event, with Uranus in the mix, it will not play out as planned.

For example, some years ago, I did an astrology reading for an acupuncturist who worked out of her apartment in Boulder. I told her that Uranus was just entering her 10th house of vocation, so to expect some changes or disruptions there. Within a week of Uranus crossing her Midheaven (i.e., 10th house cusp), there was an electrical fire in her apartment (very Uranian), forcing her to vacate her home and office indefinitely, move out of her hometown and really start over in many ways.

And, while in the short-run, she was plenty pissed off at moi for not giving her a more precise warning (in the old “kill the messenger” mode), in the long-run, after several years that is, this undesired event proved to work out very well for her in, of course, many unforeseen ways at the time.

In another example, I did a reading for a client who was having a two-year Uranus transit over his natal Moon in Capricorn in the 4th house of home and family . He was in a long-time dead marriage , but with two young kids and a dread of financial loss, custody battles and endless litigation, had been putting off doing anything about his stagnant situation, even though it was making the love of his life (whom he’d been seeing secretly for years) psychosomatically sick.

I told him: “It’s now or never. And, yes, it would be a painful two years of going through a dark tunnel to get free, but Uranus rules freedom, and this transit was his last, best chance of using these Uranian energies to blow up his home life (ruled by his traditional family-model Capricorn Moon) and literally choose life over a living death .”

Needless to say, after two challenging years of litigation, he was finally free to wed his soulmate and they’ve been joyfully together ever since. Many years have passed since our initial consultation, but he has confirmed to me that he was very happy to have gotten this reading and, specifically, to have taken decisive action based on it, as he learnt an invaluable lesson: love and freedom are priceless and precious. And Uranus, chimes in: AMEN!”

This last case, while equally challenging and life-changing, is perhaps more positive to stomach as the circumstances were resolved proactively by conscious choice rather than forced upon one by a sudden accident. This was also the situation when a morbidly obese client of mine had a Uranus transit over his Mercury and experienced a revolutionary change of mind/heart and chose to have lap-band surgery, lost over 100 pounds and probably saved his own life, or at least vastly improved his quality of life, health-wise.

I can’t think of too many signs Uranus would be unhappier in than in earthy Taurus where he is considered in “fall.” Uranus is “exalted” in the opposite sign of transformative Scorpio, where “out with the old, in with the new” is more the rule. And, if Uranus is uncomfortable, you can bet he’s going to blow up all of our staid, old comfort zones big time—even if we’re still in denial that our habitual “pacifiers” are stunting our growth.

But in unadventurous, comfort-loving Taurus, Uranus is sure to play havoc in his own unique way to “encourage” us to take some risks again. This is especially so if we’ve started decorating our ruts in the delusion that “it’s not so bad.”

Therefore, we may be forced to reexamine how addictive, in a non-life-force enhancing way, some of our most important comfort zones have become. This means that, until April 2026, many of our most cherished attachments of what we think we “need” to fully enjoy ourselves may be tested as life presents us with some entirely new paradigms.

If how we take our comfort has become a dead zone for us and holding on to our habitual patterns is at the expense of stretching and growing our beings deeper and wider, not to worry, as Uranus is surely going to blow up anything that has become too stagnate—be they habits , relationships, jobs, etc.

If we can get a head start now by loosening our grip on our comfort ruts under our own volition then, while we’ll still experience growing pains, there will be a lot less suffering than if we let Uranus to do all the work.

The first year of any outer planet transit in a new sign, such as the Uranus cycle in Taurus about to begin, always sets up the gist of the themes that will be playing out over, in this case, the next seven-year cycle. All outer planet transits tend to pack the biggest life-changing wallop over the angles of the chart (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house cusps) or when crossing over personal planets.

I researched the last time Uranus transited through Taurus to get a feel for what’s in store on the world stage. For, just as when reading an individual’s transits, I always inquire as to what happened the last time an important transit occurred. For example, Karmic Teacher Saturn returns by transit to its natal position every 28-30 years. So, if you’re age 58-60 now, we’ll examine the last time this happened, and it will give us some idea of the themes that will be activated. This is called a recurrence in astrological terms.

So too, when Uranus last transited Taurus between June 1934 and May 1942, we saw many things that rocked our world, as Taurus is the natural ruler of the second house of material security, money, possessions and what gives meaning and value to our lives. For example, in 1933: The Dust Bowl, with Uranus stirring things around wildly followed by the New Deal Recovery Act. Then, in 1935: The Social Security Act. And finally, in 1942: the US enters WWII.

Added to this, during the Depression throughout the 1930’s, some people lost absolutely everything of material value (Taurus). Some lost all their investments in one fell swoop (Uranus) on Black Friday. But, in fact, Uranus was still in Aries in October, 1929 when the market crashed. Just as Uranus was back in Aries one more time between August 2018 and now. Also, Saturn was in Capricorn in 1929, just as he will be as of December 19, 2017. Many experts say we’re way overdue for a market correction and the astrology of recurrence concurs, as we’ve seen over the last few months.

Most recently, Trump, or as Spike Lee calls him “agent orange:),” declared a so-called national emergency on February 15, 2019, just as Uranus was at the final degree of Aries and just a day or too past his conjunction with warrior Mars. This event mirrored when Hitler declaring a national emergency on February 27, 1933, just as Uranus was at the exact same final degree of combustible Aries. This action allowed Germany to suspend due process of law and arrest and jail political opponents without a charge, thus establishing the Nazi dictatorship.

I mention this, lest we forget and are doomed to remember the hard way:(. And this is exactly why looking at historical recurrences of astrological outer planet transits can be so fruitful in giving us a heads-up warning system for ourselves and for the planet.

From a long-range Taoist perspective, winning WWII and the Social Security Act were just some of the good things that came out of the last Uranus in Taurus transit. But as always in history, we tend to move through cycles of first the bad news and then later—sometimes much later—the good.

I’m always reminded of the example of Tibet being invaded by the Chinese in 1950. Devastating and horribly bad news, right? But since then most of the spiritual teachers and lamas who survived were driven out of their homeland and Tibetan Buddhism has spread throughout the world. Good news, right?

In addition, Karmic Teacher Saturn is now in his ruling sign of builder Capricorn, so can expect several years in which the global theme will be the need to rebuild our infrastructure, and this includes transitioning to cleaner energy sources, especially since structures will be becoming outmoded and disintegrating at a faster rate than ever before, especially with transformer Pluto also in Capricorn. So, what to do? We need to prepare for the unexpected, especially in terms of our material resources, which is ruled by Taurus. This is particularly so if we have Taurus in our 2nd house in our birth charts, as this is not the best time to gamble or take risks with more money than we can afford to lose and still be able to provide for ourselves. On the inner levels, the way to go is in surrendering to unpredictability as the perfect accelerant for cultivating flexibility in the Flow of Life with maximal growth. Easier said than done, I know, but so is just about everything worthwhile and that’s why they call it growing pains, after all.

In addition, with Master Healer Chiron, as of February 18, finally in enthusiastic, initiating Aries for the first time in over 50 years, there couldn’t be a better time to commence a reinvigorating quantum level of accelerated healing as we co-create a totally new paradigm and vision for who we are becoming. This certainly goes along with the theme of letting go of our comfort ruts that have become our addiction of choice. For more on this:

The Nature of Addiction —It's Only Human

On the personality levels, channeling this newsletter has brought up more resistance in me than I’ve felt in a very long time—perhaps since my early 20s when my channeled readings advised me that: “To be the best trance channel I could be, I would need to give up my party girl ways.”

Those early readings pushed my rebellion buttons so strongly that it took me four years to bottom out on pot and drinking, clean up my act in sobriety, and surrender to fulfilling my dharmic calling, just as my first Saturn return cycle hit at age 28.

Now, I’m more aware than ever, in my third Saturn cycle at age 65, what is at stake, karmically speaking, if I choose not to take the high road spiritually with the Uranus transit that is coming up for me. And, I might add , there’s hardly anything that pushes my aversion button more than a spiritual teacher who doesn’t walk her talk.

If I choose to indulge in fear and dread of the upcoming transit of Uranus over my core of being, i.e. 4th house cusp, in July of 2023, I can foresee that I’m in for some major karmic poopoo, not to mention some Uranian-type sudden and unexpected lessons.

And why am I projecting probabilities over four years away? Because, just as soon an outer planet enters the sign of a major upcoming transit over one of our personal planets or angles in the birth chart, we can feel that “the train is on the track” and hear the rumbling, and that is just what I am intuiting now with Uranus.

As Seth says: “We create our own reality.” And furthermore:

“If you imagine dire circumstances, ill health, or desperate loneliness , these will be automatically materialized, for these thoughts themselves bring about the conditions that will give them reality in physical terms. If you would have good health, then you must imagine this as vividly as in fear you imagine the opposite.

You create your own difficulties. This is true for each individual. The inner psychological state is projected outward, gaining physical reality. The rules apply to everyone. You can use them for your own benefit and change your own conditions once you realize what they are.”

And so, rather than indulge in fear-based metaphysical angst that my “personal sky” is going to fall even a little bit or that all my comforts zones will get blown up, I’m focusing on going with the Flow, updating my gratitude list and repeating the mantra “All is well” daily as needed.

Most importantly, I’ve realized that it’s the perfect time to start stepping out of any habits in my daily life that have become comfortably stagnate. In my case, this means, among many other things, cleaning up my diet more by restricting too-rich foods which, while providing me with sensual pleasure and emotional comfort, are aggravating my gallbladder more and more.

And, as we of a certain age all already know, we can’t get away with the same behavior in our third Saturn cycle, that we could in our 2nd or 1st karmic cycles, especially as it involves the health of the physical vessel, which requires more maintenance with every passing year.

So, in my case, it’s no longer enough to just keep doing my bi-yearly detox/cleanse, and then blithely go ahead and clog up the whole system again. The pain/pleasure continuum has definitely started to shift downwards enough to get my attention.

Here’s one of my favorite quotes of all time, which is especially timely with Uranus on the event horizon:

“When a cat falls out of a tree, it lets go of itself, becomes completely relaxed, and lands lightly on the ground. If the cat made up its mind that it didn’t want to fall, it would become tense and rigid and would just be a bag of broken bones upon landing. In the same way, it is the philosophy of the Tao that we are all falling out of a tree, at every moment of our lives. As a matter of fact, the moment we were born we were kicked off a precipice and we are falling—and there is nothing we can do to stop it. So, instead of living in a state of constant tension and clinging to all sorts of things that are actually falling with us because the whole world is impermanent, be like a cat. Don’t resist it.” ALAN WATTS

The reason this is one of my favorite quotes of all time is that it epitomizes the philosophy I aspire to live by on a daily basis. We get to choose whether to: Fight a riptide, take other’s “stuff” projected at us personally or resist surrendering fully to the Flow of Life especially when it’s knocking us down.

Or, we can hold the faith that whatever is pushing at us is a form of spiritual resistance training—to make us stronger and more flexible—AND that the Flow will always carry us in perfect time to the other shore. In the current geopolitical climate being “like a cat” is spiritual pragmatism at its highest. And if the above quote doesn’t “do it” for you, here’s another one with a decidedly Uranian flavor:

“If everything seems under control, you’re probably not moving fast enough.” MARIO ANDRETTI

In closing, we all know that growing pains are a necessary part of Life. But if we can also remember how many hundreds of incarnations we’ve suffered in and allow this remembrance to keep our hearts cracked wide open with compassion for all human suffering, then this can be a path to total aliveness—here and now. As Maya Angelou said, referring to racial and generational karma: “Your crown has been bought and paid for. All you need to do is put it on your head.”

In the Buddhist tradition, Nirvana is not some external divine place, but the purified state of consciousness in which we're free of all negative emotions. Nirvana has four characteristic features:
1. A state of cessation of disturbing emotions from one's mind.
2. Absolute peace , a state of total tranquility of disturbing emotions.
3. Exuberant satisfaction, which is free from all forms of dissatisfaction.
4. Definite emergence, when one will no longer relapse to an unenlightened state.

For most of us, based on where we’re at on the karmic wheel, the most we can hope to enjoy in this incarnation is three out of four of the above criteria and that includes the vast majority of spiritual teachers and gurus. So, if we can let go of any obsessively goal-oriented ego-need to be fully enlightened (with no return to lesser states) and off the wheel (which is actually a form of aversion to what is), then we can experience a most wonderful way to be in our bodies, our roles and the world (but not of it) and enjoy playing the Earth Game with total aliveness.

In the end, it’s all grist for the mill of our karmic healing. As we awaken to our timeless Self, we can choose to surrender the fear and resistance to our soul curriculum exactly as it is presented in the knowing that it always comes with growing pains. How could it not?

Suffering is created to the degree that we resist reality just as it is, no matter how difficult and challenging, especially now with Uranus perhaps pulling the rug out from under us of our security, safety, and comfort ruts to keep us light on our feet.

This is where the miraclegro medicine of allowing our hearts to crack wide open with compassion for suffering (i.e. the default human reaction to not getting what we desire) is the essential key. It allows our love-light to shine out through our Being as a healing balm for Self which, over time, naturally overflows outward to others.

It is then that we begin to experience the total aliveness of the maturing Soul. This means embracing the ebbs and flows of money flowing in and out, people flowing in and out, aches and pains and health challenges flowing in and out AS our new comfort zone—our new normal in which we can maintain peace of mind and joy in Being amidst all the constant ch-ch-ch-changes that Uranus in Taurus will bring.

Wishing us all the perfect healing adventure in consciousness, as flexibility in the Flow becomes our new comfort zone with plenty of room to grow,

"Without this 'wearying world' we cannot find enlightenment. We would be bereft of the fabulous friction which illuminates our Buddha nature. We practice and we work with whatever arises—without attempting to convert the disorderly nature of existence into something more regimented. We have to be the ' peace and quiet' rather than expecting the world to supply it." Ngak'chang Rinpoche
