Some of us may think back on yesterday, last week or even last year and wish we could take something back. It may be a bad decision. It may be something we said or something we did. It may be something we just wish we had done differently. We all have regrets and we can all think back on something we would change if we could. But we can’t. We can’t change the past.
As unfortunate as that sounds, it is true. It is true that what is done is done. What has been said, has been said. What was decided and carried out, can’t be changed. However, we still do have an opportunity to change things. We have the opportunity to change today and the future. We don’t have to stick with what has happened in the past and dwell on it. We can start over today.
In order to start over, it doesn’t have to be the beginning of the month, week or year. We can begin again today. God gave us this day, this brand new day, to do good things and make good decisions. In fact, we should give back the day to Him right now. We should give God this day to use as He sees fit. We need to turn over our decisions to Him so they will be His decisions.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
We need to begin by thanking God for this day and giving it back to Him. We should ask Him to take our hearts and make them full of love and giving today. We need to ask Him to give us the love He has for others that is unconditional. We need to ask Him to give us a heart willing to give to others and remove our own selfish desires.
Next we need to give God our ears. We need to ask God to take our ears and help us to listen. We need to listen out for His voice and His direction today. We need to use our ears to hear when others are asking for help. We need to use our ears as God leads us to by listening to what He wants us to hear rather than what we want to hear.
We need to also give God our eyes. We need to look for the things of God today. We need to look for others who may need a kind word or helping hand. We need to ask God to make our eyes see what He wants us to see. We need to look for opportunities to help others rather than looking for how we can benefit in all situations.
Finally, we need to give God our mouth. We should ask God to help us and direct the words we say. We need to ask Him to give us His words rather than using our own words. We need to ask Him to help us choose our words carefully and be sure they are what He wants us to say to others. We need to look to God to help us know when to keep our mouths closed and when to boldly speak out.
When we give God back the day He has so graciously given us, we will become more aware of how we can better serve Him. We will become more aware of how we can help others throughout the day. When we give God back the day and ask Him to control our hearts, ears, eyes and mouth so we do and say things pleasing to Him, we will experience Him working though us and know He is making a difference.
Proverbs 4:23-25 “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.”
