THE POWER OF HERBS

by Debbie Dodge, Ph.D., LPC, CHLC

Since the beginning of time herbs have been used for medicinal, nutritional, and dietary supplementation. Many medications used in the pharmaceutical industry are derivatives of a secluded part of a plant. However, using a secluded part of a plant is not the same as using the plant as a whole. Using the plant as a whole allows for sometimes hundreds of bioavailable constituents to work synergistically together to heal the body. These constituents work on a cellular level to heal the body. Pharmaceutical medications are stronger as they seclude the chemical in the plant to create a powerful and usually quick fix for acute symptoms. Unfortunately, many of these medications are not manufactured to heal the problem, but to make the person feel better temporarily until the next dose.

Plants have the power to heal! Some plants ( herbs ) are known for their blood purifying ability, some for their anti-inflammatory ability, and some for their anti-aging effects. There are literally thousands of different herbs that have healing properties for one or several health issues. And, if you do not have any health issues, they are perfect for maintaining good health, energy, and longevity .

Plant nutrients can be taken in by the body in many different ways. This includes eating fresh fruits and vegetables, taking herbal supplements in the form of capsules, tablets, teas, tinctures, and suppositories, and allowing plant oils and nutrients to be absorbed into the blood stream via body lotions and skin care products. Aromatherapy is another means of bringing nutrients into your body via your nasal passages – straight to the brain where they can affect your mood and emotions. Some herbs help remove toxins from your body to help it function better and the herbs actually draw these poisons from your body, out through your skin, body wastes, and airways.

As people are living longer lives, it is becoming necessary to take care of our bodies in ways that will offer optimal quality of life in the later years. People are no longer willing to live their last years in a nursing home. As more and more people are opting for organic foods, natural health products, and a low-stress life style, it is important to be educated about the path to health that is right for you. We are all different and have different health problems and genetic predisposition to disease. One size does not fit all!
