What is NLP?
NLP, the popular shortened form for ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming’, is a quick, easy, painless, permanent, innovative, and highly successful form of modern psychology . Its’ applications hold no boundaries - from the highly publicised elimination of a phobia in under 15 minutes to banishing stage fright, breaking life-long habits , reducing stress and improving confidence. NLP even has techniques for enhancing performance in aspects that you already do well – such as teaching, business or sales. NLP can be described as: -
Neuro - How you experience the world through your five senses.
Linguistic - How the language you use shapes, as well as reflects your experience of the world
Programming - How to think, speak and act in new or more positive ways.

How It Originated
Richard Bandler and John Grinder founded NLP in the early 1970’s at the University of California, Santa Cruz. They created it from the study of excellence in communication, and is based on the observation of outstanding therapists primarily: - Milton H. Erickson (World-renowned psychiatrist and Hypnotist), Frederick Perls (Gestalt therapy), and Virginia Satir ( Family therapy). This led to the discovery that despite their differences there were some key patterns of skills, attitudes and strategies they held in common.

Why NLP?Traditional psychological methods are often very slow, costly and painful. With the client having to re-live the problem, often session after session. Not so with NLP. It is strickingly different. Its’ techniques are quick and effective. NLP discovered that knowing why you have a problem, or for how long doesn’t often help. For instance some people are scared of dogs because they were once bitten. Knowing that doesn’t make them feel any less afraid now.

NLP is a tool used to calibrate and understand how you make sense of the world. Its’ techniques demonstrate how you 'code' your experience, through an awareness of the images, sounds and feelings you make. For example, how do you know that a pleasant memory is pleasant? How do you know when to feel scared or happy? How do you know you like or dislike something? When we understand the specific ways that your brain makes distinctions, then it is easier to make changes. For example, a particular client had a phobia of spiders. Once it was discovered ‘how’ she did this in her mind, by the pictures, sounds and feelings she made, a particularily swift and powerful NLP technique was used, eliminating her phobia completely and permanently.

Now, some people might be sceptical at the validity of such a quick and easy ‘cure’. But consider this. A phobia is often a one-time quickly learned response to a stimulus, e.g a snarling dog. If the mind can quickly and automatically learn something. It is capable of quickly and easily un-learning something. The mind learns fast and is generative. Like learning to open a door for instance, or putting your hand on a hot stove. You don’t have to keep re-learning.

NLP Uses
Amongst its’many applications, NLP has successfully been used for the following: -
phobias, limiting self-beliefs, stress, exam nerves, depression, public speaking , stage fright, allergic responses, dyslexia, victims of crime/accidents, trauma, habits (such as smoking, drug addiction , alcoholism, nail biting), painful past memories, weight control, guilt and grief .

It also offers ways to boost self-esteem/confidence, improve relationships, teaching, parenting, goal setting and maintaining, creating positive motivation, improving business, sales, rapport, advertising, sports performance, decision making and self-healing.

What Others Have Said About NLPScience Digest. 'NLP could be the most important synthesis of knowledge about human communication to emerge since the sixties'.

NLP co-founder Dr Richard Bandler puts it his way - 'NLP is a methodology - based on the overall operational presupposition that all behaviour has a structure, and that structure can be modeled, learned, taught and changed (re-programmed)'.

Association of NLP (ANLP). ‘NLP offers an understanding about how people think and behave, and is a flexible approach bringing about positive, fast change’.

From NLP Books :- 'Heart of the Mind' by Connirae and Steve Andreas.'NLP is a powerful and gentle approach to overcoming lifes' problems. The field is based on the realization that we create much of our experience by the specific ways that we see, hear and feel things in our mind/body - what is usually lumped together and called 'thinking'. This is how it is possible for one person to feel terrorized by a simple task like public speaking or asking someone for a date, while someone else will feel energised or excited by it'.

'In Your Hands' by Jane Revell & Susan Norman.
'NLP is designed to give people more choice and help them to achieve their potential. It's an attitude to life and a collection of techniques, patterns and strategies for assisting effective communication, personal growth , positive change and learning ’.

So, is NLP Effective?Well, the Proof is in the Pudding!

Of course you don’t have to take their or my word for whether NLP is an effective form of psychology , or even if it is right for you to give it a try now. But maybe you’ve already tried other ways to have your problem successfully dealt with, and failed. Perhaps you feel now it’s about time it was sorted, quickly and professionally, once and for all.
