What Are You Doing to Prevent Catching A Cold?

TIPS FROM DR IRIS ROSENFELD TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!!

1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough/sneeze; throw away the tissue.

2. Wash your hands several times/day and lather for 30 seconds every time.

3. Use soap or disinfectant spray on doorknobs, telephones, computers, copier/fax keyboards and other “shared surfaces”.

4. Don’t touch your face—especially your eyes, nose or mouth.

5. Get 7-8 hours sleep/night so your body can rest.

6. Exercise —Moderate walking (especially outdoors) for a minimum of 30-60 minutes/day. If already sick with symptoms below the neck you need to rest. If your symptoms are above the neck you can exercise , just go easy.

7. Simplify your life and expectations.

8. Call your funniest friend—laughter increases the number and activity of antibodies in your body.

9. Learn deep breathing exercises--Meditation

10. Take a bubble bath; sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus oil on your shower walls and will help to breathe more clearly.

11. Diet : Eat deeply colored fruits/vegetables in a rainbow of hues, nuts, eggs, fish and other lean meats. Especially eat: Brazil nuts---high in selenium that encourages production of antibodies, Carrots—contain carotenoids that are powerful anti-oxidants, Chili Peppers—triggers a release of watery fluids and helps to break up mucus and wash out viruses, Red Bell Peppers—high in Vit C and E, Red Meat—guards against iron deficiency and contains zinc which bolsters the immune cells; Medicinal mushrooms—shiitake, maitake and reishi are powerful immune stimulants and can be eaten a few times/week.

12. Foods to avoid: Milk, yogurt , and cheese—increases mucus production and the release of histamines; Alcohol; Limit Sugary Foods—jumpstarts inflammation and kills white blood cells; Fried Foods—containing saturated and trans fats trigger inflammation and Reactive Foods—ones you know you have a sensitivity to(gas and/or bloating).

13. Limit TV watching of doom and gloom and note that TVs and computer screens emit a blue light which interferes with the production of melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep.

14. Drink plenty of water—keeps lymph channels open and allows dead viruses and bacteria to be swept out of the body.

15. Relieve a raw nose: snip off a leaf of an aloe plant, slit it open and dab the gel.

16. Soothe a sore throat—brew tea with slippery elm (Throat Coat Tea) –drink 4-6 cups

17. Calm an upset stomach—Cut up 1-2 inches of ginger root into small pieces and boil in a quart of water for 10-20 minutes, cool, strain and sweeten or add mint.

18. Curb Congestion—Warm your feet in a tub of hot water and soak a pair of cotton socks in ice-cold water. Take your feet out of the tub, put on the cold socks and a pair of dry, thick wool ones and leave on for 3 hours.

19. Leave a fever—It delivers heat and white blood cells to the infection. Take a cold bath or drink cold water. If tops 102 degrees with stiff neck, lung congestion, etc.. call your doctor to rule out a more serious infection.

20. Banish a cough—Use the Hops plant-a muscle relaxer (1/4-1/2 tsp 2-3xs/day). Also, cut up 1 lemon and boil in 1 cup of water... add honey to taste.

21. Quiet a Cough—the chemical theobromine found in dark chocolate relaxes the vagus nerve which runs through the airways to the brain and triggers coughing. Use 2 ounces of 65% or more.

22. Inhalation therapy—relieves symptoms of a cold/flu and helps in prevention; in a quiet place take several deep sniffs with each nostril using tea tree oil. To relieve symptoms pour boiling water into a bowl with a few drops of tea tree oil, drape a towel around your head, lean forward, close your eyes and breathe in the steam.

22. Lymph drainage techniques can be shown to you by a trained practitioner.

23. Massage therapy and chiropractic adjustments can improve the function of your immune system.

24. Detoxification cellular cleanses may improve immune function.
