Often you can tell someone is lacking in confidence just by their posture or how they walk. Sometimes you can hear it in their voice or see it in their facial expression. It is even possible to feel their insecurity in the way they shake your hand.

Were I to poll my clients, the majority would tell you that one of the greatest benefits of discovering their ‘real’ speaking voice is the increase in their confidence level: they feel better about themselves and it shows in how they sound, how they look, and how they carry themselves. It is something you can see and hear in their ‘before’ & ‘after’ video clips as well.

You have a better voice inside of you just waiting to come out. It is warmer, richer, probably deeper in pitch, resonant, and powered by means of your chest cavity.

There is a wonderful scene in the first movie of the series, Superman , with Christopher Reeve. He has just entered Lois Lane’s apartment as Clark Kent and decides to tell her that he is Superman. With his slouched shoulders and insecure manner, he removes his glasses and proceeds to stand up straight and tall which is in stark contrast to his previous posture.

He takes a breath (from his diaphragm) and calls to Lois in a deeper, resonant voice that is quite the opposite of the nasal sound we hear from his other character, Clark Kent. The transformation is quite amazing because he changes from a wimp – although an ever-so-sweet one – to a confident, tall man. As Clark Kent, we never notice how big Christopher Reeve is; as Superman we do.

Something similar happens to my clients who discover their ‘real’ voice. Yes, they hear a much better voice that vibrates in their chest when they speak, but they also look more confident when standing at the lectern. One woman’s colleagues noticed that she walked with purpose after her voice training. And, she no longer resorted to ‘baby talk’ which was one of the reasons she was sent to me.

If the image you project has an impact on your business or your personal life, then it might be in your best interest to consider voice training as part of your personal development . It is also important to understand that the voice I am referring to is the one you hear on your answering machine, not the one you hear in your head. Your friends, your family and your colleagues recognize you by the former sound – not the latter.

With a good voice training program, you will certainly sound better, you will probably look better and you most definitely will feel better about yourself. And that is a wonderful boost for your confidence.
