Doing your own pest control is simple, for the most part, but there will be times when you’ll need to use equipment to apply different pesticides and herbicides. You will also need equipment to protect you as well. There are many effective pest control products that require special instruments designed specifically for application and protection.

Dust pesticides are highly effective and often only available through special distributors and used by specialists, you can purchase these pesticides such as Drione dust, but you will need to use instruments to apply it. Dusts are very effective because it absorbs moisture and irritates their bodies. Because of this it will dehydrate insects quickly and deter them from living in the areas you have applied it. Dusts will last for about a year depending on where you apply it. There are many hand dusters (dusting instruments that work by squeezing the main body of the instrument with your hand, these dusters come in different sizes and can be fitted with different attachments to reach different areas.

These dusters are highly effective for all small insects including bed bugs, ants, termites, roaches, silverfish, carpenter bees and many others. Owning one good duster will give you the option to deal with anyone of these pests and they are easy to use. Some tips for use; make sure to hold the duster at arms length (elbow completely straight) this will minimize the chances of getting the dust on yourself and your clothes, make sure to follow all directions and precautions! Dusters are required for dealing with carpenter bees and carpenter ants. There are many variations available including extended versions for reaching high places. You can also use dusters to apply diatomaceous earth!

Pro Tip; when using hand dusters, shake the containment bulb or section, and hold the duster in a manner where the dust is settling away from the needle or tube that is blowing the dust, this allows the lighter material to penetrate deeper into cracks and crevices.

If you are treating your attic, you can use a mechanical duster called a ‘dust mizer’ this works using a hand crank and spreads dust very efficiently throughout a void area, crawlspace or attic. When using some pest control products you will need to use protective equipment, masks and goggles will also be needed to protect your lungs and your eyes, especially in small tight places. When you are done dusting make sure to immediately wash your clothes and take a shower, paying close attention to the areas behind your ears and your hair and eyebrow.

Sprayers are needed to apply many different herbicides and pesticides, especially for large areas and many weeds. Sprayers are useful and sometimes necessary for treating your foundation, trees and other areas. Pump sprayers contain the liquid chemical or mixed solution and are pressurized it, so when in use, it will spray out of the tip of the instrument.

Hose end sprayers are usually for herbicide treatments for lawns and large plants, these use a mixed concentrated solution that is added to water sprayed from the hose, it is added in a controlled manner depending on its setting and the mixed solution. Trigger sprayers are like ones used on Windex bottles, and will spray an adjusted amount for each pull, these can be tiring for very large treatments or multiple areas.

For home use you may not need electric or gas powered sprayers, these are used for very large areas and commercial use.

For spreading granules there are many hand cranked, and push spreaders for treating large areas, these are sometimes not needed (such as Ant pesticide granules can be focused immediately around your foundation).

Always be safe, follow directions and precautions. Spend ten extra dollars on goggles for your eyes and an air mask for your mouth. It will save you a $30,000 bill from a day in the hospital. Always use protection for your eyes and your lungs.
