Before we can answer this question properly we need to have at least a brief definition of the term. A medium is a psychic who has developed their psychic skills so that they can communicate with spirits that exist in other dimensions. They can hear or experience the thoughts, voices and mental transmissions from the spirit world. A medium is receptive to the energies the spirits use to communicate and becomes, in effect, a vehicle for communication between the two worlds.
Many people believe that psychic ability is in built to us all and that everyone has psychic abilities to some extent. If this is true it is possible for anyone to develop the skills needed for communication with spirits whether they feel they have already done so or not. Some people feel the connection more than others and it is these people who will be more inclined to develop their psychic abilities and perhaps work towards becoming a medium or using their abilities in a slightly different way.
Mediumship is a very complex and involved discipline. It is not merely about having a feeling that you can communicate with the spirit world. It involves a great deal of focus and practice and learning skills to enhance your natural abilities. It involves completely opening yourself up to the spirit world and the depth of emotion that will be found there. This is a daunting prospect. Learning these skills is not something that should be taken on lightly and it is not something that everybody will succeed at. To be successful you will need to develop skills that most people never even realise they have. You will need to get in tune with your intuitive and unconscious mind to a degree that most people would be uncomfortable with. In short, it is not an easy journey.
You may have to fight a degree of prejudice from those around you if developing this area of your psychic ability. Many believe there is an unavoidable dark side to the spirit world and learning to communicate with the spirits will connect you to this. It is certainly reported by many psychics that they have experienced feelings of evil, sadness and deep loss in their connections with the spirit world.
It may be that you feel you have communicated in some way with the spirit world or have received messages, information or impressions from spirits. Being a full blown medium, however, involves harnessing these skills, developing them and practising them over a long period. It will then involve purposeful and successful interaction with the spirit world with a high percentage rate of success. Then, and only then, can you comfortably and fairly say that you are a medium.
