Chapter 9
Why Money is not the Total Answer to Success and Happiness
I’m sure you have heard the proverb: “If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for life.” I feel this is very true. A friend told me about a story that aired on TV. He explained that they took a homeless man off the street and gave him a hundred thousand dollars. The producers gave the man instructions on how to save and invest his money. If he invested properly, his standard of living would improve significantly and leave him in a better financial situation.
Wisdom and principle are more important.”
The man took the money, bought a truck, and gave money to all of his friends. He went out and had a good time. He spent money as though it grew on trees. After about six months, the show producers returned to check on the man’s progress. They found that he was homeless again and living out of his truck.
You can have all the tools in the world, but if you do not utilize them properly, they’re useless. An old man asked me, “What is the difference between a man who can’t read and a man who doesn’t read? Nothing, because they both will end up dumb and lost.” This experiment proved that money, by itself, does not bring success.
The homeless man had all the principles, but did not use them. The Bible is very clear in Deuteronomy 8:18: “It is the Lord, your God, who gives you the ability to obtain wealth.” God gives us all the abilities, and it is not his fault if we do not use them. Do not blame your failure on whether you are talented or not. The principle that worked for Bill Gates works for you too. We all have ideas, but do we all act on them? I have a cup that was given to me that reads, “The only one who is stopping you is you!” Thanks, Sandra.
Remember, when you start pointing your finger, three fingers are pointing back at you.
