If you have been thinking about getting some work done in your workplace (an office, a store, or even a hotel), you may have wondered whether there is any way around hiring a commercial joiner to complete to renovation for you. For some business owners, they may have even considered completing the work themselves. This is never a good idea over hiring a professional commercial joiner, and is true for a number of reasons:

  • A commercial joiner has experience in designing and constructing various pieces of furniture and fixtures (from cabinets and display cases to ceilings and staircases), so they know what they are doing. Unless you have undertaken a similar DIY project before, it is likely that you will have no idea what you’re doing.
  • Working with timber and construction can be a highly dangerous area, as there is plenty of room for accidents to occur. If you are unfamiliar with labour of this kind, you are more likely to hurt yourself (and it is likely that your insurance policy will not cover you when completing work that you are untrained for on your workplace premises). A commercial joinery firm, on the other hand, will be well aware of the injuries associated with their work and will be properly trained in how to avoid them.
  • A commercial joiner (at least, an established one) will have all sorts of contacts in the industry, meaning that they may be able to get good deals on the materials and supplies that they will need to complete your project. They may also buy materials in bulk and store them for later use, which is also much cheaper again. If you do the renovation as a DIY project, however, you will be forced to pay the retail price for your materials, which can work out to be highly expensive.
  • If you begin a DIY project in your workplace, but decide halfway through that it isn’t going the way you planned or that you have made some big mistakes, it will actually cost you a lot more to hire a commercial joiner at this point. This is because the joiner will be forced to fix up or remove any work that you have already completed, adding precious time on to the completion of your project.

Whilst a DIY project may be tempting for completing a renovation or doing some improvements to your workplace, it is always best to hire a commercial joinery firm to undertake the project for you. Not only can it be highly dangerous for you, it can be costly if you make any mistakes or have to buy at retail price.
