The Magician , a card in the Major Arcana, is another powerful card in the realm of the Tarot .

I've been meditating alot on this card lately as its energy speaks to many of the struggles I see friends and family experiencing. Any time one isn't able to actualize the results one seeks in their life, a lack of the Magician energy can said to be at work.

EyeTarot.com defines the Magician card as relating to...

* Taking concrete action, decisiveness
* Wielding power towards positive, constructive ends; producing results
* Acting with clarity and focus

I like to think of this card as the card of efficacy (the capacity to produce an effect). When we lack the energy of the Magician card, we are not confident in our ability to produce change in our lives, or to impact the world around us in the ways we desire. We just can't seem to convert our dreams into reality.

The Magician Card: When the Magic Ain't Happenin'The lack of Magician energy manifests in several ways. Consider the following story from my own life:

My grandmother has been expressing a desire to lose some weight and get into shape. Her brother convinced her to join the local gym with him. My grandmother has not done any exercise to speak of in probably 20 years. So, she goes to the gym and she decides to jump into an aerobics class. Guess what? She couldn't keep up. Her heart starting 'racing' and she felt faint. Her conclusion? The gym wasn't for her, and she quit after one visit.

Now, it is true, my grandmother acted with 'decisiveness' by choosing to quit the gym, however that's really not the kind of decisiveness that reflects the Magician's energy. A mind acting with clarity and focus and employing rationality would consider the circumstances of their bad gym experience. Did I join a class that I wasn't in shape enough for? Did I push myself too hard the first time out? Are there classes or gym activities that would be more suited to a body that has not worked out in 20 years? For instance, a water aerobics class?

Ultimately, my grandma's true goal was more to convince herself and others that she had 'tried' to reach her goal of fitness than to actually wield the power of her will and mind to achieving actual fitness improvement. The very way she told the story of demanding her gym membership be refunded and her description of the trauma of having felt out of shape during the class was clear to all around that her goal was sympathy-- not a desire to truly be effectual in producing results and achieving her fitness goal.

The Magician Card: How to Harness Its Energy
Harnessing the energy of the Magician tarot card requires some soul searching. I find that these questions help me to determine if I'm making the most out of the Magician energy, or if I'm simply posing as a Magician:

* Are my actions producing tangible results? If not, what concrete steps can I take to try a different approach? The old adage "If you do the same thing you've always done you'll get the same thing you've always got" comes to mind here.
* Do I really want to achieve my stated goal, or do I just want to convince myself and others that I 'tried'? In other words, am I being honest and clear about my actual goal?
* How quickly do I give up when an obstacle presents itself? Do I get immediately discouraged and give up? Or, am I confident that I can (through research or a different approach) find my way around the obstacle?
