Goal Setting 201
So, you’re an achiever in life, right? You think you have pretty good goals. You’re a business owner, corporate executive, entrepreneur or someone who wants to achieve more in life. You’ve been to seminars about setting and achieving your goals and you think you’ve pretty much got it down. Well, I would submit to you that you have heard only the first session of goal setting .

More than likely, you’ve heard about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic or Risky (depending on who you’re learning from), and Timely. This is a very common acronym for goal setting and it works…to a point.

There is another way to look at goal setting . I’d like to share this with you today. First let’s define some things. Let’s define success. You probably have your own definition of success, but for the purpose of this discussion, let me use this particular definition. This is from Earl Nightingale: Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. It is not a destination, it is a progressive journey. Secondly, I’d like to define the purpose of a goal. The purpose of a goal is to grow. It is not to achieve something, it is to grow.

Now, with these definitions, let’s continue.

There is another way to set goals. There are 3 categories of goals, they are A type goals, B type goals, and C type goals. The A type goal is something that you, the Business Owner or Executive, already know how to do. This is where most people set their goals – and also why most people don’t achieve what they want in life. There is the B type goal. This is something that when you inventory what you, the Entrepreneur , know you’re able to do and stretch yourself a little and you think you can make this happen (that’s why your started your Business, correct?). Lastly, there is the C type goal. This is a goal that you have no idea how to achieve. This is a dream or a fantasy for you. You want this, but don’t have any clue where to start or how to accomplish it. It is HUGE. THIS is the type of goal you want to set in life. This is also the type of goal that you need help to accomplish. This goal will cause you to leave your comfort zone and cause you to grow in life. This goal excites you and scares you at the same time.

This is how goal setting is done.
