It was past midnight when I saw the email that informed me that I had been accepted for the International Summer School at Oslo University, Norway. I woke up everyone at home to tell them that I would be one of five hundred students visiting this beautiful Scandinavian country for ten weeks on a full scholarship. My parents were ecstatic to hear the news but anxious about how I would manage on my own in a foreign land for the first time. It was to be my first trip abroad and despite my own anxiety , I did my best to put my parents’ worries at rest.
The day I left the county was packed with excitement and nervousness in equal amounts. I slept through the long flight and woke up to the announcement that we were approaching Oslo airport. But what really chased the sleepiness away was when the pilot announced that the temperature outside was just fifteen degrees Celsius. I was greeted with a gust of cold wind. It was quite a change from forty degrees in Delhi. I opened my suitcase to find my jacket. It took me a while to find it as my mother had packed my bags. I knew I would have to do it myself next time work with a. assignment expert
Now, if I were in India I would have taken a taxi to my destination but my online research had taught me that in Oslo, taking a taxi would be tantamount to being a spendthrift. So I took the subway to the University. Upon reaching the residence hall, I was told that my room had been assigned and my roommate had already settled in. My roommate was a Chinese student and our initial awkward discussion about courses vanished as he proclaimed his love for Bollywood movies and Aishwarya Rai. We bonded over movie talk and Jhingmin Wu became my first friend who was not from India. We talked for a long time and before I knew it, I was yawning my head off. Though it was sunny outside I was tired. I thought it was the jetlag till I realized it was close to midnight. Sunsets during summer are very late in Norway.
I was to study a course on international development and the class had students from twenty different countries. I was going to represent India and this felt like a formidable responsibility. The classes were discussion based and we had to do the readings on our own. I was not tested on what
I remembered from the texts but on what I thought of them. I worked with my classmates on group projects and doing so, we confronted negative stereotypes we had about the other. Group collaboration brought us closer as a unit and we even discussed controversial topics like racism. We realized how despite our differences we shared similar dreams and doubts about our future.
Oslo is located in the lap of nature, and the city has an excellent public transport system. One can take a tram and get to a beach or forest trail within minutes. In our free time, we went for hikes and I realized how much I loved being outdoors. I learnt to read maps, picked up elementary Norwegian, cooked Indian food for potlucks and managed my own stipend money. The hardest part, though, was getting used to eating dinner at 5:00 pm. I grew up and into myself during this trip. I came back to India with a bagful of happy memories, chocolates and of course, friends that helped me and walked with me on this beautiful journey.Services like assignment help australia helps students to solve their problems.
