The Power of Your Subconscious Mind(Your best friend, or your worst enemy)

There are few stories written about the subconscious mind. There are no songs singing its praises. There are no great movies extolling its powers. You seldom hear people speak about it. Some don’t even know that it exists. And there are still others, even a few in the scientific professions, who refuse to acknowledge its awesome influence. And yet it remains the most powerful, and virtually untapped, human resource in the world!I’m reminded of an old fable that I heard many years ago from Dr. Art Winkler. Some ancient gods were trying to decide where to hide the greatest power in the universe so that mankind would not be able to find it. One of the gods said, “Let’s hide it on top of the highest mountain.” They discussed that idea for a while, but decided that would not do because man would eventually climb the highest mountain and find that great power. A second god came up with the idea of hiding the greatest power at the bottom of the ocean. After another discussion among the gods, it was decided that man would someday discover a way to explore the murky depths of the ocean and the power would be discovered. Finally, a third god said, “I know what to do. Let’s hide the greatest power in the universe within the mind of man. He will never think to look for it there!” And according to that old fable, they hid the greatest power in the universe within the human mind.

If you want to change the way you are now and become the person you want to be, the person God created you to be, then you also need the proper tool, which is knowledge. But first ask yourself this question: “What am I going to do with this knowledge?” Because with knowledge comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes control. Do you want to be in control, or do you want other people or things to control you? You are the one who must choose your place in life. Sometimes, even if a prison door is left open, the prisoner chooses not to escape. It’s your choice. You can become the person you want to be, but you must not only want it, you must put the knowledge you gain into action. A carpenter’s tools will never build a house as long as they remain in the carpenter’s box. It’s that simple. What you will receive from this book can change your life. Just remember, your mind is like an umbrella. It only works when it’s open.
Let me explain to you a little bit about the human brain and how it functions. The brain is divided into two hemispheres: the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere. The left hemisphere is the analytical part of the brain and in it are contained logic and reason. It is where scientific and number skills are developed, as well as language skills.
The right hemisphere of the brain is where creativity and ideas are born, and it is the source of imagination , feelings and emotions. Music and art awareness are also developed in this part of the brain.
There are two levels of the mind: the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. When we are functioning on the conscious level we are mainly using the left hemisphere of the brain. This part of the mind, the analytical part, is not fully developed until approximately the age of thirteen.
Although the subconscious mind seems to emanate from the right hemisphere of the brain, it is much broader and is not confined within the brain itself.
The conscious part of the mind is merely a narrowed- down version of our true existence, with the riches of the subconscious remaining virtually untapped.
To better understand the proportion of these two levels of the mind. Picture the conscious mind as literally the tip of the iceberg! The massive amount lying beneath the surface is the subconscious mind.
God gave us a beautiful gift: the subconscious mind. Have you ever given a child a really expensive present and a few moments later found him or her playing with the box, the true gift sitting off to the side? That’s what we do. We use less than 10 percent of our brain. It’s like we’re just playing with the box.
The subconscious mind is a very powerful part of your being. It controls all of your bodily functions. It keeps your blood circulating and your body temperature stable. It knows if there is an infection anywhere throughout your body, and it will develop thousands of white corpuscles and send them to that area to fight the invader. You are not even consciously aware that all of this is going on. You may even notice now, as you are sitting reading this article, that perhaps your legs are crossed or maybe one hand is up to your face. You did not have to make a conscious effort to cross your leg or move your hand. Your subconscious mind knew which muscles and ligaments to activate to get your hand or leg into that position. Your body is nothing more than a robot that is controlled by your subconscious mind.
But as powerful as it is, the subconscious mind cannot distinguish right from wrong, true from false or good from bad. It cannot separate reality from illusion. Everything you have ever heard, seen, smelled, tasted or experienced—every thought, secret, misunderstanding and false belief—is recorded in your subconscious mind.
The subconscious mind can be compared to a highly sophisticated computer. If you were to program into a computer that 2 + 2 = 6, then every time you use that computer to calculate that answer, you would get the wrong answer of 6. The subconscious mind functions just like that computer because it alone cannot rationalize or analyze. It accepts things literally! The conscious, analytical part of the mind will say that 2 + 2 = 4, or tell you that if you touch a hot stove, you will get burned. But many times we allow false information to be programmed into the subconscious mind, and we’re not even aware that it is happening.
Let me give you some common examples of this and see if any of them sound familiar. Have you ever heard someone say, “I can’t quit smoking; I’ve been smoking for thirty years!” or “I’ve been on all kinds of diets and I can’t lose the weight”? I’m sure you’ve heard the infamous remark, “I’ll always be fat; it runs in my family .” Or the one that I believe is number one among overweight people, “Ev-erything I eat turns to fat; I can just look at food and gain ten pounds!”
Our belief system is developed not only by what we tell ourselves verbally, but also by what we tell ourselves in thoughts. This is called self-talk and it can have either a positive effect or a profoundly negative one in your life.
I want you to take a few moments and reflect on your own self-talk. Remember comments you may have made about yourself in normal, everyday conversation. Have they been positive remarks, or are you unconsciously programming false information into your computer? What about your private thoughts? Have they been things that will help improve your life, or have they been negative suggestions that actually wear away at your self-esteem ? Remember, what your mind perceives as truth, it will manifest into reality. It’s like a self-fulfilling prophecy!
