Undergoing surgery for prostate cancer is not the end of a problem; proper care is to be taken so as to eradicate the disease completely. The patient needs to follow certain norms and take few precautions to bid goodbye to prostate cancer . Few post surgery precautions are listed below.

Pain Relief:  It is obvious that post surgery the patient may experience pain and discomfort within the surgical area. To reduce or lower pain, the patient will be given pain relievers. Do not take any medicine without consulting your doctor especially aspirins. Do not consume aspirins for the first three days after the surgical procedure. 

Incision Care:Incisions are covered with small tapes which may be removed 10-14 days after surgery. These incision must be kept clean and dry for one week after surgery. Do not apply any creams, lotions or powder without asking your doctor. Do not let the tapes drench in water while taking shower.

Skin Care: The patient may notice bruises within the treated area turning blue and black right after the procedure. Feeling numbness, tingling or discomfort is normal. The blue and black color vanishes with time.

Driving: Do not drive until the doctor allows to. Most men can resume driving within 10-15 days after surgery.

Exercise : Do not carry out rigorous exercises which may strain your lower abdomen. Start with slow movements of exercises increasing with every passing day.

Sexual Relations: Since the prostate gland is present in the reproductive system of men, there would be a break in sexual activities for some time. However the surgeon will let patients know when to resume sexual activities.

Survivorship Care Plan: Before leaving the hospital, the surgeon will provide the patient with a detailed plan which may include schedule for the next follow-up examinations and tests, list of possible long-term side effects from treatment, diet and physical activity suggestions. 

Nutrition & Dietary Supplement : Eat healthy and nutrient filled food to speed up recovery. Properly follow the diet plan provided by the doctor. Diet that is rich in vegetables and lower in animal fats is always helpful.
