I have been a project manager for 15+ years. Prior to that (and during the past 15 years) I have also acted as a programmer and business analyst. Along the way I've earned the standard Project Management Professional certification (PMP) along with a Masters of Science in Project Management from George Washington Univerisity in D.C.
As a project manager my area of focus has been on systems projects but over the past few years I have grown to recognize that many people managing projects, regardless of age, experience or education, really understand how to apply the science and art of the discipline. (The statistics of failed projects is growing proof of that).
When I looked at how projects are managed in not-for-profits and small businesses I realized there is a wonderful opportunity to bring simple, yet effective methods to those environments.
Thus started my journey to develop an effective step-by-step process which anyone can pick up and apply immediately to manage any project regardless of size or complexity. I have spent hundreds of hours researching the leading project management methods along with thousands of actual project management experience to distill the necessiary information into a practical guide anyone facing a project can use. Too much of the project management profession is based on fluff and waste which causes people to waste time going down fruitless paths. Once there they equate those failures with project management and often abandon it for good. My goal is to prevent that when possible and try to reverse the damage as well.
My handbook is almost completed. I expect it to be finished in late June 2012.
I take a practical approach to each project situation. While I value the need for standard processes I urge that each project manager find what works best for them. My sytle and your style, whether its how we solve problems, communicate or react to a crisis will always be different. I can provide you with the framework, but you must provide the content.
To me the results matter more than the inputs. When it comes to people working in a team, trying to standarize a processes too much kills the creativity and productivity of many teams. I urge my teams to do what seems natural provided they are getting the results. I'd rather have 1 reliable process, where the inputs may change from team to team but the results are what I expected than, than a 100 repeatable processes any day.
I have a few blog sites which I encourage you to subscribe too. Through these sites I explore common issues in project management and practical solutions you can use immediately. I will also offer eBooks and other sources of information from time to time.
www. howtomanagesmallprojects- focuses on how to manage small projects, with insights for small business owners and "accidental project managers". These are often people who find themselves managing a project but might have littler or no formal training or experience. www.project-management-guru.com - this blog focuses on how to become a better project manager.I can be reached via email at:
