I am survivor of domestic violence. In my marriage for 21 years. Three years after my marriage ended I decided to go into the field of abuse. Worked in one of the two top shelters in the United States. During that time, I got a BA online. Started out as a volunteer, became relief staff, residential counselor, and the next promotion was case manger for the homeless shelter that was located in the same building as the battered women shelter. I split my time between the battered women shelter, and the homeless program. Due to personal reasons I moved back to New Jersey.
There I formed a non-profit organization. Spoke to hospitals on how to recognize domestic violence. Did a television cable show. After living in a cold climate decided to move to Florida where I live now.
Worked in a shelter for three years. Due to budget cuts I had to leave. Decided to start my own business on domestic violence. My forcus is education, and empowering survivors.
My goal is to educate on domestic violence. To do public speaking, to empower suvivors of abuse, do blogs, and eventually work on a book.
I am asked constantly who do women stay, why can't she just leave. I explain to the person that women stay for number of reasons. Where are they to go. What about day-care, finances, and how they were raised. There are other reasons of course. Working in a shelter my goal was to get her out safe. A safety plan is the most important thing to do when leaving. When educating on domestic violence I go over, what is abuse, the cycle of abuse and why do men batterer. I go into detail.
Domestic Violence must end one day. 4 women die a day. Every nine seconds a women is being battered. Forty-two percent of murdered women are killed by their intimate male partners. Remember these are the cases that are reported.
We must get into the schools and teach on dating violence. A lot of states are not doing that. I am also working on workplace violence and educating doctors and nurses what to recognize in cases of domestic violence.
That is my mission and goal in life to empower and one day end abuse.
