The Sure Schott Plan Finding Peace Amid The Wreckage Re-Thinking Your LifeFresh Starts Are KeybyMarilyn Schott Without a doubt the last 12-months have taken a toll on our peace of mind if not our wallets. If you haven’t, you probably know someone who has lost a job, lost 50-65% of their 401Ks, lost a huge chunk of their investments in the Stock Market, or lost their home. And, age doesn’t make a difference. Everyone is living differently even if this recession has not affected your job. Even Warren E. Buffett has personally lost an estimated $25 Billion in the financial panic of 2008, enough to cost him his title as the world’s richest man. I was just talking to our insurance professional, Don Israelson, he acknowledges working with so many people who are normally unfazed by any economic turmoil, and they are feeling it now, and really modifying their lifestyles. If you can relate to this, you will want to read on. It’s important to take a huge breath and get through the anger and bitterness. And, that can take a while. However, when no income is coming in one has to get past this stage of anger more quickly. Mourn the loss. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t let anyone else beat you up? Now is time to make a plan. It’s like a new beginning. We may not like it but we can work on getting over it or find a new way to find happiness and success. Where to turn? Below, you will see the various resources available to include job programs and clothing for the interview process. JobsETC.3660 N. Washington Blvd. 897 E. Here’s a smattering of some of the best: General Career Search: www.employflorida.com www.bestjobsusa.com www.jobfocus.com www.careerbuilders.com www.workswfl.com www.monster.com www.jobbing.com Federal Government: www.federaljobsearch.com www.jobsfed.com www.fedworld.gov Healthcare and Pharmaceutical: www.healthcareers.com www.medzilla.com www.medicalworkers.com Human Resources: www.astd.org www.hrcareerusa.com www.shrm.org www.ihirehr.com Finance and Accounting: www.aafa.com www.acountemps.com www.careerbank.com www.thinkjobs.com Information Technology: www.brassring.com www.it-jobs-it.com www.computerjobs.com www.technies.com Architectural, Building, and Construction: www.constructiongigs.com www.constructionjobs.com www.jobsite.com www.tradejobsonline.com Other critical tools for your use:You might be feeling better about now. Could it even be relief? This is a word to keep in your medicine cabinet and use it often . Even when you use this word, you feel better . Get the breathing down into the tummy area and holding for a beat rather than breathing shallowly in your upper chest up to three or four times a day can greatly impact your health and totally make you feel better. This one action alone can greatly enhance your heart health. Make sure you take advantage of the resume writing classes or online tutorials to increase your odds in receiving job interviews that are available at JOBSetc or SCORE. I always include a brief letter to share some of my other attributes other than educational and work histories, with words like enthusiasm, energetic, dedicated, professional, and so on. Once you are accepted as an interviewee, make sure you brush up on what’s important about yourself because it should be ready to roll off your tongue. This means you will need to come up with some questions about yourself and be ready to answer them. You may never be asked any of the questions that we’ll list below, but it gets you involved about talking about yourself. Also, always practice the answers out loud at least 10 times after writing them down. Really put some thought into this. You will come off more polished and professional in the interview. Now, you must dress the part for the interview. Make sure you find something in your wardrobe that is already a favorite, and you have not outgrown. Make sure every detail of this outfit looking crisp, clean, and ironed. Make sure buttons are secure and no threads are showing. Make sure the collar of the shirt, dress, or jacket is perfectly clean. Don’t go out and buy a new outfit as many people think they should do because it may wrinkle terribly, be too short or too long on you. You will want to wear something that people have told you that you look fabulous – by fit and by color. Keep in mind, turquoise, coral, and periwinkle are universal colors that look fantastic on you no matter your heritage. Also, the color yellow – light yellow, gold, beige gold – notstop sign yellow – is the non-verbal tongue, which means wearing this color will always have more people talking with you than not. A great book on the psychology of color is The Language of Color by Dorothee L. Mella and another one is The Color Answer Book by Leatrice Eiseman. Don’t forget to check your shoes to make sure they have been polished and not scuffed. Take another look at your nails to make sure they are clean, short, and buffed. Take still another look and see if you’re not due for a haircut. Women, don’t show cleavage, that’s not how to get a job. Men, don’t wear that scruffy beard if you’re going for a professional position. Shave it all off. One more item, before you go on the job interview figure out what you realistically need to make to keep you happy and pay the bills. You may need to consider taking a pay cut. However, you may still want more than the job is willing or able to pay, but at least let them know what you need. Once you are in the Interview, don’t talk about your former job and how they let you go after all these many years. It sounds mournful and sometimes down right angry. Don’t let the interviewer know you may be losing your home. The interviewer can’t be responsible for that, and it can color the interview negatively. It’s really important to let go of the past. All you have is today, nothing more nothing less. You will need more than willpower. You will need a plan to get moving with the new life. It may be time to read a new book about change or hire a coach to work through your issues of dissatisfaction and making changes. One thing is clear, life is not going to go back to the frivolous days of buying carefree and put it on your credit card or cards. Today you will want to carefully consider your purchases. Books for consideration: Immunity to Change by Robert Kegan, Ph.D. and Lisa Lahey, EdD, both experts in adult learning. This book discusses why people don’t change, those who have successfully changed. Kegan and Lahey are in awe of the ingenuity with which we – all of us – keep our lives under control, to make sure that our anxiety is kept at bay and our fears never come true.”And life could just go on that way,” Kegan says, “except that the system, this anxiety management system you’ve built, charges rent. It’s costing you something. And what does it cost you? It costs you your goal.” Another book you might consider is Oneness With All Life by Eckert Tolle. The greatest goal you can set this year is to make peace with your life, no matter what your circumstances. One of his insights is not to seek happiness. If you seek it you won’t find it, because seeking is the antithesis of happiness. Happiness is ever elusive, but freedom from unhappiness is attainable now, by facing what is rather than making up stories about it. You can control your thoughts. Mark Twain said and I paraphrase, 95% of all that you worry about neverhappens. So get out of worry and get into peace and relief. Here is a list of questions you might wish to consider when going to the interview: If you have done something over and above the call of duty, how do you like to be rewarded if additional financial reward is not possible? How to you like to hear criticism – on a scale of 1 to 10, ten being the most honest, where do you need the critique to be?If you heard gossip about your direct manager, what would you do?Is their a quote that emphasizes your attitude, work ethics, motivation? What’s the last book you read and what did you learn from it?
