Erin McClelland has over 17 years of experience in the behavioral health field and has worked as a counselor, program director, researcher, process improvement specialist, policy representative and entrepreneur. Her clinical career began counseling patients in methadone maintenance programs and then working in outpatient drug-free programs and specialized services such as women, family and prevention program development. In 2002, Mrs. McClelland began a private practice in which she developed a community based prevention program designed to reach parents and educators through school and community seminars and home sessions. She also began developing a more holistic treatment approach that included diet and exercise evaluation.
In 2003, she was hired as the Practice Improvement Collaborative Manager at the Institute of Research Education and Training in Addiction (IRETA). In her time at IRETA, she was trained by the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI) under the direction of former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill to implement the Toyota Production System in healthcare settings in order to reduce waste and errors, improve performance and outcomes and decrease costs. This training consisted of the case method training approach of Harvard Business School (HBS) and TPS case studies created by HBS professor Steven Spear, who interpreted TPS for implementation in the US. She also served as a prevention and opiate addiction expert on the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's 25 Cities Initiative which worked to address cities demonstrating the 25 worst heroin problems in the country.
In 2006, she conceived and developed Arche Wellness, the first Department of Health licensed orthomolecular addiction treatment program in Pennsylvania. Arche Wellness offers an intense biochemical recovery approach. The Arche Wellness model is now one of the most advanced and intensive addiction treatment processes in the world. Her experience and unique education in process improvement strategies have helped to make Arche Wellness a state-of-the art learning organization dedicated to achieving perfect patient care.
Erin has a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science degree from Chatham University. Her program has been featured twice in Industrial Engineer Magazine and recognized for its extraordinary approach which uses engineering based problem solving to address highly challenging issues such as addiction treatment, mental health treatment and morbid obesity. She has served as the health writer for multiple Pittsburgh based magazines and has been featured as a healthcare expert on numerous news and radio broadcasts.
Solving problems to their root cause, no matter if the problem is the national debt, healthcare costs or depression, is the only way to truly resolve an issue without unintended consequences and relapse.
You wouldn't put a diabetic in a room full of other diabetics, ask them to talk about being a diabetic and expect them to get better. So why do we do it with addicts all the time?
Addiction is the only health condition that is characterized and formally diagnosed by both mental health and physical health symptoms. So it's not just one disease - it's two.
