Fasteners find a great use in the fabrication industry. It helps to connect different parts of a structure to each other. The most common type of fastener is a hex bolt. It has many advantages over welded connections. The main thing is we can remove nuts and bolts so that the structure comes apart. We cannot do this with welded connections so welding is preferred when we need a permanent kind of structure

Common industrial fasteners

Hex bolts are otherwise called as hex cap screws or hexagonal screw head bolts. Most common use of this type of fastener is in the petrochemical industry, food machinery industry, and construction. The type of bolt depends on the Hex Nut Bolt Manufacturers and the industry. We see many types of material in use to make hex bolts. We have the following types in common use:

Alloy steel

Carbon steel

Aluminum

Stainless steel

Silicon bronze

Brass

Property of each material varies. Brass is soft and is used for non-sparking applications. Carbon steel is brittle and alloy steel is good in tension.

Grading of material for structuresSteel is the common material used for structures. Two common varieties are plain steel and galvanized steel. To help prevent corrosion, a coating of zinc or chromium is applied on coated steel fasteners. Steel is categorized into four types. One is alloy steel. The others are Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 8. Most of the hardware is of the Grade 2 type. It does not have head markings and is least expensive. Many kinds of fasteners used in fabrication and construction are of this type.

Many people think that stainless steel is harder than steel. Stainless steel is made from carbon and iron. Chromium is added to improve corrosion resistance. Due to the low carbon content in stainless steel, we cannot harden it by heating it. While stainless steel fasteners are harder than unhardened steel, they are softer than hardened steel fasteners. Due to its long lasting nature, stainless steel is used for a wide variety of applications.

The common material used for hex bolts and nutsWe use 18-8 stainless steel to make hex bolts and nuts. This is the most type of stainless steel. The 316-grade stainless steel is better because it has higher corrosion resistance. So, it costs more. If you do not have local Hex Nut Bolt Manufacturers you can find a reliable and cheap one online. Stainless steel 410 is a third type of steel used to make fasteners. Grade 5 is tempered medium carbon steel. This is widely used in automotive applications. This is harder than 18-8 steel but does not resist corrosion as much as 316 steel.

Structural bolt is like a hex bolt but it has a bigger head. The A 325 is most commonly used for making this type of bolt. Here we see two kinds of material. One is plain finish made from medium carbon steel and unplated while the other is hot dipped galvanized steel. This is also made from medium carbon steel but has a high resistance to corrosion.
