We often hear the word “stress” bandied about in day-to-day life. Whether it’s at work, home, or a mixture of both, difficult situations and pressure affect us all. In today’s typically hectic lifestyle and with the ambition to ‘have it all’, it may seem like stress is just part of the process and will be worth it in the end. But are we underestimating the effects that stress can have on our wellbeing? And what can we do to tackle this pressure before it has ill effects?

It’s essential to your wellbeing to keep sight of the big and important things in life, without letting minor irritations take up residence at the forefront of your mind. Often this means taking a moment to step back and consider your situation when dealing with a stressful situation. Try asking yourself the following questions:

- Is it important?
- Will it matter tomorrow?
- Is there anything you can do about it?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, it’s worth taking a five minute break to allow yourself room to relax. Calling upon this checklist in difficult times can help you to pick and choose your battles.

It’s also in your own interests to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle – 30 minutes of exercise three times a week and a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to boost your mood and energy. Although it sounds simple, there is some truth to the healthy body, healthy mind mantra and finding time to swim, walk, go to the gym and eat fruit and veg with each meal can work wonders.

In addition to the above tips, one method that many have found to be helpful is self-hypnosis. This technique reduces stress levels in several ways. Firstly, the deep sense of ease and relaxation provides you with a break from the grind of regular life and allows you to find repose. Hypnosis also encourages more positive feelings and thoughts, so you’ll be training yourself to push away negative thought patterns and replace them with a more productive, positive attitude and mind-set. In turn, this influences your actions and will bring you better results. By creating a small slot of time for self hypnosis in your schedule, you’ll be taking your wellbeing into control by actively training yourself to feel more positive and revitalised in an easy and natural way.
