PGDM means Post Graduate Diploma in Management. The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because when an Institute is an autonomous body and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot offer MBA degree. Even IIMs, XLRI’s being autonomous and independent bodies do not offer MBA degrees. They only give PGP Diploma or PGDM.
When Institute is an autonomous body, they design their own curriculum instead of following syllabus outdated by University. The reason why they chose to do is because the curriculum can be updated regularly depending on the need in Industry and change in trends. Considering this feature, it can be said that PGDM courses are more Industry relevant as compared to MBA courses.
Any college which offers AICTE approved courses will also offer PGDM not MBA. If the College is affiliated to University they can offer MBA course affiliated to that University. If the same college is offering AICTE approved course, it means they are offering PGDM which is not linked to University. AICTE – All India Council for Technical Education has control on both technical and management courses and especially colleges not under Universities. Even colleges offering UGC recognized MBA Programmes in most cases should have AICTE approval.
If any PGDM is to be equivalent to MBA then the course duration should be 2 years.
AIMA PGDM or PGPM course is a certificate programme, AIMA stands for All India Management Association an apex body which conducts MAT examination. AIMA also offers PGDM ,a course approved by AICTE and Distance Education Council. There is a lot of difference between AIMA PGDM & AICTE PGDM.
If at all the choice between an MBA or PGDM arises, its essentially required know the Institute’s credentials first. If MBA is offered, then one must check which University is it affiliated to and whether it is a full time MBA or Distance MBA?
If PGDM is offered, then one is required to check if the Institute has autonomous status or check if it is AICTE approved or not.
