We can do anything and everything just to impress others, can’t we? Showing off the expensive things we’re using or even the successful career we have could be the best way to leave a mark…or maybe not.

Honestly, there isn’t anything wrong with wanting to be impressive, but it’s always how we do it that makes us desirable or not. Thus, it’s important that you be very careful in choosing the means by which you’re going to impress people around you.

If you want to impress others in a dignified way, here’s what you should and should not do:

You don’t have to try too hard.

Trying too hard is the easiest way you could be frustrated with yourself and annoying to others. You have to avoid going overboard, and should instead try to be subtle in the way you do things. Many of us don’t realize that by not trying too hard to be impressive, they can actually impress people more. Always be true to yourself, show people who you are and let everyone see what you can do well.

Be less of a talker, and be more of an action-taker.

You’d want to be known as a man of action rather than a man of words. There is no point in talking non-stop if you can’t deliver results because of your lack of action. It’s always a good thing to promise less and deliver more. By doing this, you’re creating a positive impression for yourself.

Learn to respect everyone.

Every individual, regardless of their looks, gender, cultural background, religion , and position in an organization, deserves to be respected. Thus, it is a must that you show everyone the kind of treatment that you also want. Without a doubt, treating people with respect is the best way to create a lasting impression.

Don’t hesitate to greet other people…and do it with a smile.

A smile could mean so much to the people to meet or greet. Make it a habit to smile on people, and you will be surprised by how they will reciprocate the warmth that you always give them.

Practice using a more friendly tone.

Make it a point to say ‘thank you’ and ‘please’ more often. These two simple phrases indicate respectfulness and generosity, and will help you build good relationships with the people you work with. But then again, you’ve got to be careful not to overdo it.

Compliment those who deserve it.

Everyone loves to be recognized and appreciated. Thus, you shouldn’t hesitate to compliment people for the good job they’ve done. It would also be nice if you mention how an office mate is looking good perhaps.

When it comes to career planning , you should focus not only how well you’re going to do in your job and career, but also on how well you will build and maintain good relationships with people. Always aim to be impressive not just for your skills, but for your personality as well.
