You’ve heard the expression “Reach for nothing and you will be certain to get it”. Over the years, I have definitely discovered this to be a true statement. However, it has taken me a quite a few years of experimenting on how to refine my goals to make them more realistic and achievable. Now, nothing can dissuade me from my goals. No amount of negative comments from my friends and colleagues can discourage me because I know how to keep on track. Here are a few tips I have learned along the way.

1. The first and most important is to be REALISTIC. I have heard the statement, “I want to be a millionaire so I can just put my mind and it will be”. Well that sounds nice. However, you cannot just wish yourself to be a millionaire. You have to be realistic and set up a plan that will bring you to that place. Set yourself short range, medium range and long range goals. Read them everyday and know they can be achieved. Put together a daily method of operation that you will perform everyday in order to achieve those goals. Do not deter. You need willpower, commitment, persistence and desire to achieve all your goals. But they can be achieved with a detailed plan on how to get from point A to point B and the persistence to never give up.
2. Have the ability to REFINE your plan. Life is not a straight line from point A to point B to point C and beyond. There are many curves, twists, roadblocks and obstacles along the way. The key is not to look at those challenges as failures but as the need to refine your plan or course correct. We are always course correcting in our lives in order to achieve our larger goals. Failure is not an option. We just need to tweak our plan a little.
3. Be prepared for OPPOSITION. Most great people of the ages have pressed on with their goals firmly planted in their minds and an unending desire to see their goals reached. Abe Lincoln became president after losing several political battles in his life. The Wright Brothers were determined to fly after much opposition that is was not possible. Martin Luther King spearheaded the civil rights movement which literally overturned a culture of separation of the races. Each person had something in common. The desire to overcome all obstacles and never listen to the naysayers. Persist with their positive thoughts and mind.
4. Claim your VICTORY and relish in your accomplishments. YES – at some point you will have reached your goals. Once achieved, acknowledge and reflect on the long and travel road you had to travel to get to your destination. Take that confidence with your achievement into to your next goal.

Know in your heart that whatever you set your mind and intentions on; you can create into reality with time, persistence, courage and commitment. Set you goals high because you will get what you ask for. Why ask for a dollar when you can get a million?
