Do you wish you can go to sleep immediately the minute you lie on the bed? Though it sounds great, not all of us can do this every night and still wake up feeling refreshed and energized for the day ahead. The truth is that our inability to falling asleep easily everytime is due to an imbalance in our hormones and even more so when you are not able to feel sleepy despite counting.

For women, this is the result of estrogen deficiency which is quite common in perimenopause and menopause. When this happens, their ability to get a good night sleep suffers. In case you do not know what estrogen is, it is a sleep-maintaining hormone. For men, insomnia is generally caused by low testosterone levels. The consequences of not having a good sleep are bad not just to us but to people around us as well. You find yourself feeling more stressful, making stupid mistakes repeatedly and unable to concentrate or focus. If your profession is driving, you may even end up killing somebody. Sounds pessimistic but it is true as evident in news reports of traffic accidents.

Here are 5 tips you can apply in getting yourself to falling asleep more easily.

1. Clearing Your Mind

Clearing your mind is the first thing you need to do. You need to take out all the anxiety and distractions away and complie a list of what you should do tomorrow so that you will not lie in bed worrying about it.

2. Preparing Yourself

Preparing yourself the night before sleep is another priority you should take.

Work and studies are important but you need to tell yourself when to start, when to take a break and when to call it a day so that you can sleep and refresh your mind and body to be able to continue.

3. Preparing Your Environment

Make sure your room is clean and free from any dust and rubbish. The same goes for your bed which should not have anything lying on it other than pillow and blanket.

4. Avoid Caffeine And Alcohol 2 Hours Before Bed

Failure to do this will cause you unable to sleep no matter how hard you try as this only keeps your energy level and concious mind up to about 3 to 4 hours extra.

By the time you feel asleep, it may be too late to sleep as it could be 5, 6 or even 7am.

5. Do Not Exercise Before You Sleep

Exercises like cycling, jogging, push-ups, rope skipping, sit-ups, weight lifting should only be done in the day and not at night.

These are meant to refresh your mind and body rather than making you sleepy.
