A great deal has been said and written about the so-called Law of Attraction ’. It has been popularised by videos and books, like ‘The Secret’ and by televisions talk-show hosts such as Larry King. It’s been around for decades – Florence Schovel Shinn’s book ‘The Game of Life and How to Play It’ is a user’s manual for the Law of Attraction – it’s just that she didn’t call it by that fancy name! And yet, with all this exposure, with all its exponents, very few people actually understand what this ‘attraction’ actually means – all you have to do is look up some of Larry King’s talk show clips on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean. So what’s this ‘attraction’ all about? Does it mean that opposites attract – as Larry King briefly discusses? Does it mean that like attracts like? Again you’ll find a discussion with Larry King on this. Or, in fact, does it actually mean that you can attract into your life what you want out of life? The answer to this last question is a definite ‘Yes’ – but, if that is the case, how can you actually put the ‘ Law of Attraction ’ into action for your own benefit?

The first thing that you must understand is that the ‘Law of Attraction’ is actually working in your life already. This may come as a surprise to you but what you’ve got to realize is that your life is an exact mirror image of what is going on in your head. Unfortunately, most of what is going on in the normal person’s mind is doing them damage rather than good because, left to its own devices, the subconscious mind is both backward looking and negative, constantly ‘enabling’ you – and that’s clearly not the right word – to repeat all the learned behaviours that are, in fact, creating your life as we speak. In other words, as a result of the normal mind being in turmoil, it follows as night follows day that the normal life is also in turmoil.

Whether you know it or now, the Law of Attraction is a given fact of life. Quantum physics confirms that our world works on the basis of energy in – energy out. And your mental energy is the most important part of the equation as far as your life is concerned – it’s the thought that counts. I’m not sure, from reading some of the mountain of stuff – often misleading stuff – on the subject, that many will have fully grasped the gravity of this situation. But say that you have. You already understand that, to quote ‘ The Secret ’, your thoughts become things – what occupies your mind ends up manifesting in your life. You may have grasped this all-important concept intellectually – but intellectually understanding these facts and being able to get this ‘ manifestation ’ working for you rather than against you is a totally different ballgame.

If you do not deliberately take action each day to ensure that you’re in the right state of mind, then it really doesn’t matter how much you understand the way life works, you’re simply fooling yourself into the nice cosy notion that this ‘Law of Attraction’ can change your life for the better – to paraphrase Barbara Ehrenreich in her bestselling book ‘Smile or Die’ this is the kind of positive thinking that has led so many people to the precipice of self-destruction. There’s no point in understanding the Law of Attraction unless you’re actually prepared to take the necessary action to get this wonderful universe working towards the outcomes, the life, that you really want.

To properly practice the so-called ‘Law of Attraction’ you need to clear your mind. There is little point in filling your mind with thoughts of things that you want – plenty of research suggests that pretty much no one knows for sure what they truly want. It would be far more effective – far more in tune or in flow with the way the universe works – to fill your mind with the only place and time where life is really lived – the here and now. The universe only exists moment to moment in the here and now. Life can only respond to your input in the here and now. As Ekhart Tolle might say, there is enormous power in Now. If you fill your mind – turn your full attention – to the present moment, you will drag your subconscious away from its obsession with both the past and the negative deeply embedded subconscious fantasies that have your life where you find it at present. You will become truly focused – efficient, effective, inspired and inspiring. In this state of mind you will attract the very best in life, enabling you rise to places that normal people will never ever go.
