THE BOOK OF MATTHEW
Tags: Matthew, Jesus, Jesus Christ, Bible, New Testament, Christianity

Matthew records for us the Sermon on the Mount, the parables of the Kingdom and the teachings of Jesus, the Son of Man on forgiveness .

On being tempted in the desert after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights... "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (4:v 4)

Jesus begins his ministry

Then Jesus began to preach...

" Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near." (4:17)

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT (Chapters 5 and 6)

In his longest recorded sermon, Jesus began by describing the traits he was looking for in his followers. He called those who lived out those traits blessed, because God had something special in store for them. Each beatitude is in almost direct contradiction of society's typical way of life. In the last beatitude, Jesus even points out that a serious effort to develop these traits is bound to create opposition. The best example of each trait is found in Jesus himself. If our goal is to become like him, the Beatitudes will challenge the way we live each day." *

"God blesses those who work for peace , for they will be called the children of God." (9,10)

"You are the light of the world - like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." (13-16)

Jesus Teaches about the Law

Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them,

I warn you - unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious lawe and the Pharisees do, you can't enter the Kingdom of God, at all! (20)

You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies. Pray for those that persecute you. (45) .

Jesus Teaches about Giving to the Needy.

"Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired, because then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven .

Give your gifts in secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you." (6: 1-4)

Jesus Teaches about Prayer

"When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you. (6:6)

"When you pray, don't babble on and on, as people think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need, even before you ask Him! Pray like this... (6:7,8)

"Our Father in heaven may your name be honoured.`May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, just as it is in heaven. Give us our food for today, and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. And do not let us yield to temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

*

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen *

* New King James Version

If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. (6: 8-15

"Don't store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be."

""No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (19-24)

Jesus Teaches about Worry

"And he will give you all you need from day to day, if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern (33)

Note: This means to put God first in your life, to fill your thoughts with his desires, and to serve and obey Him in everything. Actively choose to put God first in your life... and everything else falls into place ("As my good friend, Lindsay "The Prophet" says, "Get yourself right with Jesus, man!")

"So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring it's own worries. " (34)

Jesus Teaches about Judging Others

"Stop judging others , and you will not be judged. For others will treat you as you treat them (1,2) For others will treat you as you treat them." (1,2)

The Golden Rule

"Do for others what you would like them to do for you." This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets (12)

Jesus Teaches about the Way to Heaven

You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way; but the gateway to life is small, the road is narrow , and only a few ever find it." (v 13)

Jesus teaches about Building on a Solid Foundation

"But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will with a mighty crash." (24-27)

"Lord, Make my life a window for Your light to shine through, a mirror to reflect Your love to everyone I meet."
