Natural Treatment of Pemphigus Foliaceus

Abstract

Today, we are going to discuss about a skin disease that affects a person’s outer beauty and develops various blisters on the body i.e. Pemphigus foliaceus. But still research is going on to rule out the cause of this disease.  In this article, we are going to discuss the etiology, the characteristic features of the disease, its Ayurvedic aspect and the treatment. INTRODUCTION

Pemphigus foliaceus is a rare skin disease which is characterized by blister formation and affects our outer skin layer, the sub corneal layer of epidermis. These blisters will spread all over the body and have a tendency to erode other skin layers. The exact cause of this disease is unknown but it is grouped under autoimmune diseases. In this disease the inflammation along with blisters creates scaly erosions.

This disease can occur at any age, equally present in both the genders but the incidence ratio is quite high in those who have a history of allergy, compromised immune system and it also triggers in rainy seasons.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF PEMPHIGUS FOLIACEUS

As per Ayurveda , this disease is categorized under “Twak vikara” which occurs due to vitiation of all the tridoshas, especially Pitta and Kapha dosha. It will give rise to blisters and swelling on the skin, after affecting Rasa (Lymph), Rakta (Blood), Mamsa (Muscle tissue), and Meda (Adipose tissue) dhatu in our body. Further, these skin lesions will include kandu (itching), ruja (pain) and Shopha (Swelling). They also affect our digestive fire.

CAUSES

This disease has unknown etiology. But some common factors that are responsible are mentioned below:

• Our immune system – As explained it is an autoimmune disease so our overactive immune system mistakenly starts attacking our healthy cells and understand them as a foreign body which causes abnormality in our skin cells and develop erosions like blisters.
• Unwholesome diet – Excessive consumption of hot, spicy, oily food stuffs, incompatible food combinations, etc.
• Unhealthy Lifestyle – Excessive exposure to chemicals, radiations, etc.
• Use of steroids for a long duration.
• Any history of autoimmune disease.
• History of allergy like skin allergy, respiratory allergy, etc.
• Family history of the disease.
• Even there are some triggering factors of this disease – Smoking and drinking, skin diseases, rainy season, etc.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

This disease is represented with the following signs and symptoms:

• Appearance of blisters on the surface of skin, usually multiple.
• In these cutaneous lesions there will be inflammation.
• There will be pain.
• Itching and burning sensation in the lesions.
• Tenderness
• Redness
• Discolouration of the skin.
• Even these blisters may ooze out fluids.
• Recurrence of the blister.

DIAGNOSIS

In this disease various tests are required to confirm the diagnosis they are–

• Blood tests
• Samples of antibodies are tested.
• Skin biopsy.

Manjishtha Cap
