The elements of good sales copy will make or break the success of your product. You could have the greatest product in the world, but if you can't convince a website visitor to buy due to bad sales copy, you'll get nowhere. Most people's sales copy just suffer from a lack of knowledge about how to write for the web. It is far different than writing for print or a TV commercial, and lots of practice will make a ton of difference.
There are step by step instructions that can help greatly. Keeping in mind some major features of a sales letter and where in process they come up will keep your reader engaged and flowing from line to line. The real point is to get the reader through the benefits of how your product can change their life for the better: Make more money, get along better with their spouse, land a better job, etc...
Navigating the reader down the page, through the benefits and eventually to the BUY NOW button is the goal. But there are so many other features of the letter to make the point settle in to the readers head. The visitor may have questions about the validity of the product, but you are not physically there to address them. A Q & A of sample questions that you think a reader may ask themselves should be a part of good copy. Testimonials from other satisfied buyers helps ease the mind of a potential customer sitting on the fence of buying.
Sales copy on the web can be hard on the eyes. That's the nature of the Internet. It needs to be comfortably broken up into sections that can be ingested slowly. Print ads don't usually have this problem. Bullet points and numbered lists not only help drive certain points home, but help the eyes from getting worn out. Varying sizes of fonts and styles help make web copy easier to read, but not all styles will work correctly. Some fancy modern styles of fonts will not show correctly in every browser. Your sales letter could run the risk of looking out of whack. Also, avoid underlining your text if it is not a clickable link. People may assume that the link is "broken" and not trust the products.
There are dozens of other techniques that will drive the point to prospective prospects. You only have one shot at a website visitor before they back out and are gone forever.
