Music is – The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Music is an incredible aspect of life that is quite often not recognised of it true potential and value it holds. According to an article on “Mail Online” Easy listening and classical music were the top choices for surgeons and patients taking part in a new study at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

Doctors of the hospital analyzed the different responses and results of patients that listened to music whilst going under surgery as apposed to the second lot of patients that didn’t and were operated on in a usual environment. Anxiety levels were measured through the patients’ respiratory rate as well as asking them to rate their anxiety on a scale. Results were taken when the patient was on the operating table just before the surgical procedure had started and again at the end of the operation, while the patient was still on the operating table.

The research, published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons, found that the group in which had music playing in the backround; scored around 29 per cent less on anxiety levels and had an average of 11 breaths per minute versus 13 breaths per minute in the other group. Apul Parikh, one of the surgeons involved, said background music appeared to take patients’ minds off the procedure. He said ‘They welcomed the distraction, even a minor operation can cause a great deal of stress.

This example is not to say all music will heal you if you play it 24 hours a day, we all know that would be lovely if it did! However it is not realistic. But, music can be a big help in the healing of your mind and your emotions. It can relax you in stressful times and help in shaping your attitudes. We’ve all heard the saying, “You get out what you put in, in the same way the scripture Luke 6:45 from the Bible rings true to “out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” You need to have discernment in knowing what is good for you…

Music has the power to take you to another world, to rebirth great memories and times of happiness and joy. But DO NOT use this as a way to stay in the past, by listening to love songs that remind you of past relationships never allowing you to move on. Music also can keep you stuck somewhere if you allow it to. Meditating on music about anger and resentment are also not going to get you very far on your path to healing … But if you learn to know what’s good for you and listen to music that speaks to your heart in a healthy way, you can allow it to take its course, to create new things, new emotions and new ways to put a smile on your face and remind you of great times. Music can invite you to dream to be inspired and rise above and aspire to better things. As research shows; it’s proven, simply by listening to music can help calm a person in stressful situations.

When it comes down to the punch line YOU make the decisions to move along and take steps forward. But there are aspects and ways that can keep you calm and lift your spirits while you’re taking those steps and they are what you have to find. Music being an excellent one of these, don’t take the wonder of music for granted!

- Music speaks what cannot be expressed.

- Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life (Bethold Auerbach)

- Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which is impossible to be silent ; (Victor Hugo)

How many times have we listened to a song and known that is EXACTLY how we feel! It’s an intimate feeling when you hear or see something or someone that relates to you and you suddenly realise or are reminded per say that you’re not the only one on the planet that is struggling or that feels those certain emotions that are enprisoning you, and through that specific song it gives you a release and a relief when you simply listen or sing those words out loud.

Music; just like the quotes, is a way of expression that instead of holding our emotions in, can be an outlet of the heart. It can be a help in our healing process, a way in which if we use it correctly can leave an optimistic imprint in our life and be a support through every step.

So give yourself a THEME song today. Pick something which really empowers you and gives you joy every time you hear it.

Till next time!

Lots of hugs,Adele
