Why is it that after eating turkey, I feel happy, contented, and I always get a good night sleep? Research has indicated that turkey does not make you sleepier than eating other meat; since turkey contains less tryptophan than other meats. Included in some of these statements, it is believed that eating a heavy meal, such as at Thanksgiving (turkey day) or Christmas (turkey day for some) is what causes sleepiness. I have to disagree! I could eat a turkey sandwich and feel the same way. Yet, when I eat other meat, I don’t have that feeling of being contented and relaxed. It only happens when I eat turkey! So, if it’s not the tryptophan in turkey causing my pleasant reaction; then what’s in the turkey? As it turns out from doing some research, its meat is highly nutritious and a popular protein source consumed around the world.

Turkey is definitely a protein-rich food. Protein is important for muscle growth and maintenance. It gives structure to cells and helps transport nutrients around your body. Additionally, a high-protein diet may even support weight loss by promoting feelings of fullness. Just two thick slices (84 grams) of turkey gives you 24 grams of protein. AWESOME!
