For some reason, holiday weekends always throw my timing off! Just the word holiday brings to mind delightfully sinful treats. But then sanity sets in and I know that although it may be a holiday weekend, that does not translate into taking a holiday from taking care of myself and making smart choices. So instead, I make a game plan that aids me in staying on track with my goals while still allowing me to enjoy my holiday weekend.

How do you do that? Well, it's simple really! You just need to change the way you think about the holiday weekend and how you define the word treats! It is after all just an extra day off - not a permission slip to go hog wild. Right?

So here is what you do - approach the holiday weekend as you would any other weekend! Stay on track with your smart choices and your exercise routine. Decide what meal will be yours to indulge in during the course of the weekend and enjoy it. You can then stock up on appropriate treats to fool yourself during the remainder of the holiday. The same goes for exercise . Don't use the "holiday" as an excuse to skip the gym if your normal routine consists of a Saturday morning workout. Sticking to your routine will provide structure and help you to stay on track!

Here is a list of treats I stocked up with this past holiday weekend. And remember, moderation is the key! Just because they are acceptable treats does not mean to eat them in mass quantity.

1. Fresh Fruit: goes great along side my mid-morning
snack -I'm all about peaches right now, yum!
2. Specialty Diet Sodas: Dr. Browns Diet
Black Cherry Soda to wash down
lunch or dinner.
3. Fresh Hummus: accompanied by a low-carb tortilla
wrap-perfect as a mini appetizer before dinner.
4. Low Carb Pasta: Dreamfields pasta made with my
famous turkey meatballs for a delicious dinner. Carb
satisfaction minus all the carbs!
5. Low Carb/Low Sugar Ice Cream: D'Lites - a little
bit goes a long way when fighting off the dessert
devils!
6. Low Carb/Low Sugar Apple Turnovers: D'Lites-
so big you can cut them into thirds and have 2 more
servings await you. Goes great with a scoop or two
of D'lites low carb/low sugar ice cream!

Incorporating these small treats into my eating guidelines enabled me to stay on track yet still enjoy myself!

At the end of the day, I feel alot better knowing that I stayed on track with my smart choices and exercise routine. You will too!

Health & Success,

Alison
