Why does President Obama want to Attack Syria? Part 2

President Obama evidently wants to bomb Syria. But why? He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his commitment to world peace .

His response this week to those who believe he wants to attack Syria in order to defend his own credibility? " I didn’t set a red line. The world set a red line." So Obama’s desire for war is not for his own credibility.

In the past, the USA has declined to condemn the use of poison gas. Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein ordered chemical weapons attacks against Kurdish resistance forces in 1988, but the relationship with Iraq at the time was deemed too important to rupture over the matter. The United States did not even impose sanctions. This suggests political, economic, and other interests which continue to drive the US response today.

What will Obama personally gain by bombing Syria? But how will Obama gain personally by his support for illegal US warmongering? U.S. action against Syria would itself violate international law, which permits the use of force against another government only in self-defense or when authorized by the United Nations. Neither applies in this case.

The well-known maxim "We need a common enemy to unite us" was used by Condoleezza Rice, President Obama's former Secretary of State. When united against a common enemy, then the focus on that enemy provides a serious distraction from other divisive issues.

Which Awkward Issues would President Obama like Buried and Forgotten? Astute politicians use a common enemy as a reliable way to bury inconvenient truths that face them. Is it possible that Obama is hoping the furore he's creating over Syria will provide a distraction from his administration's involvement in some very awkward issues?

Several such matters were discussed in part 1, here are some other difficult issues that he would no doubt like to vanish forever. Which of these inconvenient truths trouble you the most?

1. Drones target American Citizens in the USA Senator Rand Paul led a thirteen hour filibuster in the nomination of John Brennan over the issue of drones targeting American citizens without due process. The administration replied that in certain circumstances, it is admissible for a drone to murder a US citizen on American soil without a US court indiction. It seems that Obama's administration believes that “internal deliberations” are a satisfactory legal substitute for due process. Do you?

2. FISC - the Top Secret Court you didn't know existed
Documents have just been released after an almost two-year battle under the Freedom of Information Act. The FISC secret court has found that surveillance conducted by the NSA was unconstitutional and violated “the spirit of” federal law. Yet President Obama's administration pretends its surveillance of the NSA is "robust!"

FISC Quote: "The Court is troubled that the government’s revelations regarding NSA’s acquisition of Internet transactions mark the third instance in less than three years in which the government has disclosed a substantial misrepresentation regarding the scope of a major collection program."

Since major changes were quietly instituted six years ago, FISC has become a parallel but secret Supreme Court. In one of its most important decisions, the judges have surreptitiously expanded a legal principle carving out an exception to the Fourth Amendment’s requirement of a warrant for searches and seizures. The abandonment of such constitutional restrictions goes on behind closed doors, and is then subject to secret gag orders.

3. Secret Gag Orders ensure your Ignorance of Illegal Government Activities The government issues a frightening number of gagging orders to stop law-abiding citizens and even members of Congress from talking about the government's secret illegal activities.

Ladar Levison closed his secure email service rather than "become complicit in crimes against the American people." He's been ordered not to talk about what is going on, nor is he allowed to talk about what he's not allowed to talk about!

4. Lethal Hollow-point Bullet Purchases - for Domestic Use
The administration's enormous purchases totaling some 1,400,000,000 rounds, that's well over a billion hollow-point bullets. This was investigated earlier this year by the chairmen of two Congressional Subcommittees, Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), and Jim Jordan (R-OH). As Forbes magazine said in March, 2013, "some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds ... along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers."

Despite the administration's pretense, hollow-point rounds are useless for target practice, they disintegrate on impact to maximize suffering and are therefore banned in warfare by international law. Strangely, the original paperwork for these purchases have now disappeared from the government's websites!

5. Trillion Dollar Deficits and Government Debt
Yet again, the US government is about to exceed its legal debt limit of $16.7 trillion dollars (that's $16,699,421,095,673) without getting a grip on its irresponsible overspending. The legal limit has been raised a dozen or so times already this century. But elementary maths says no country can continue to spend more than their income indefinitely. Your share of the national debt today (September, 12 2013) is up to $54,000 and still increasing.

Low interest rates help the government and business at the expense of savers, while printing money (aka quantitative easing) causes price increases - inflation - for everybody. The poor and elderly don't realize how the government is responsible for the ongoing price increases they suffer.

6. The DEA, along with the NSA, is also spying on you
The Drug Enforcement Administration engages in domestic phone surveillance on a scale that dwarfs the spying by the National Security Agency. AT&T has partnered the DEA to search through over 25 years of telephone data to identify you by your call patterns. But not to worry, the Hemisphere database is searchable only through the issuance of a subpoena—an "administrative subpoena" that the DEA itself issues. So that guarantees watertight security, right, or is Big Brother watching you?

7. Attempts at Suppressing Jury Nullification
Jury Nullification has a long and proud history in the USA dating back to 1735. Yet the government continues its attempts to suppress the jury's right to know about overturning bad and unjust laws. As the US Supreme Count directed in 1789, 1902, and yet again in 1941, the jury's job is not to blindly obey the judge's legal directions, but to deliver justice.

8. Illegal foreign aid to Egypt's Military American law says that American tax dollars being given to the government of another country must immediately stop if that government is toppled by its military - a coup d'etat.

The Egyptian military arrested the president, suspended the Constitution and installed a puppet regime, yet President Obama is ignoring US law and continuing the flow of your dollars into the hands of a military that continues to murder scores of peaceful demonstrators daily in the streets of Cairo.

9. The USA vote for the UN Trade Treaty to disarm American citizens President Obama supported the sweeping UN ban on domestic gun ownership. The USA voted for the Arms Trade Treaty at the UN, which apparently now only needs Congressional approval to unconstitutionally wipe out America's 2nd Amendment protection from gun control. Tell your representatives to vote against this when it comes up for a (probably surreptitious) vote.
