Three Reasons Why You Feel Unmotivated To Practice Guitar

By Tom Hess

There are several key reasons why you lose motivation to practice guitar. Knowing them is the first step to changing your practice approach and getting better results.

These are 3 major causes of a lack of motivation to practice and how to avoid them to stay motivated:

Reason #1. You Waste A Lot Of Time Without Knowing It

This makes you think you need to practice a lot more in order to get better (which you can’t always do). You get better results from effective practice NOT from practicing a lot more. Working together with an experienced guitar teacher is the best way to find ineffective and inefficient habits in your practice routine so you are able to correct them.

Reason #2. You Are Overlooking Some Elements Of The Practice Process

Most frequently: you don’t track your progress every week so you don’t understand which things are helping you get better.

You may go a very long time without getting any better because you don’t track the results you are getting (or not getting) from your practice. When you track your progress, you see the specific ways in which you are improving so you know which practice items are most effective. For instance, you observe how many notes are being played incorrectly, the amount of time it takes you to change chords, etc. When you refine the practice approaches that aren’t working you make faster progress. You also gain more motivation to practice when you observe yourself improving every week.

Reason #3. You Have Too Many Things To Practice And Become Overwhelmed

It’s hard not to be overwhelmed when you practice tons of items at once. This is a common mistake that occurs for guitar players without clear goals or those who lack a clear strategy to help them reach their goals as fast as possible.

Working together with a guitar teacher is the best way to make your practice effective and streamlined. A good guitar teacher makes sure that you are always practicing the right things to reach your goals while avoiding working on things that don’t help you. When you reach your goals quickly in this manner, you become more motivated to get better and better.
