We’ve all suffered with toothache, and many people would agree that there’s nothing worse than having painful teeth or gums.
Toothache can often start as a niggling or twinge of pain so you might feel a short stab or an ache and then having nothing else for a while. Once it takes hold properly though it can often build, in rapid time, to being an all-encompassing agony which, in some severe cases can affect the ears and cause headaches and migraines. The worst thing about toothache though, as you’ll be aware is that there’s often very little you can do about it. Painkillers often go so far and people often find themselves begging for something stronger than over the counter medicines as they have little effect on the pain.
What Causes Toothache?
Toothache, especially the particularly painful or persistent types are caused when bacteria causes an infection of the tooth. You’ll be aware that an infection in any other part of your body would cause swelling as this is your body’s natural defence to infection. A similar action takes place in the nerves which swell up inside the tooth, pressing from the inside and creating a huge amount of pressure on the tooth and causing the pain. This can sometimes cause an abscess which causes additional pressure and with it additional pain.
Dental emergencies can lead to lost work as people are unable to cope with their daily routine as a result of the pain they are in and can also limit the amount of social activities they can take part in.
In addition, dental problems rarely, if ever, fix themselves. They are much more likely to get progressively worse and even if a person is able to manage the initial pain, it is likely that that pain and discomfort will become unbearable in a relatively short space of time.
The only way to treat dental emergencies such as this is either with the removal of the tooth or with a root canal treatment which are both costly and potentially painful processes but there is a much easier way to manage tooth and dental care and minimise the risk of emergencies happening and slowing you down.
