When you are planning to travel around the world for a year, there are a number of things that need to be considered. In this article, we are going to talk a little about some of the most important considerations.

Can you afford it? An around the world trip will not be cheap. In fact, it is going to be terribly expensive. You have transportation costs to cover. You have food costs to cover. You have accommodation costs to cover. On top of all of that, you also have costs to actually ‘do’ things whilst you are on your trip and you need to have some money stashed away for an ‘emergency’. It is not uncommon for somebody who has planned to travel around the world for a year to need thousands of dollars sitting in their bank account.

Along the way, you may be able to make some cash ‘on the side’. There are plenty of jobs out there for foreign travelers. Many Americans end up teaching English overseas. It is a great way to make cash and there will always be somebody looking for an English tutor, whether it is for themselves or for a member of their family .

Where are you going to be heading? It is, sadly, not feasible to head to absolutely every country during a year-long trip, even if you have tons of cash at your disposal. You are going to need to be highly selective about where you head. Many people will select a very specific area to travel around. Asia or Europe are good spots for this. Not only does it tend to be fairly cheap to get around, but the culture between countries is drastic, so you get the full ‘experience’ of travel.

When you are planning your trip, it is important that you plan everything in advance. This will allow you to secure some of the best possible deals on transportation and accommodation. Sure, planning reduces some of the flexibility of an around the world trip, however, you will be saving a lot of cash along your travels.

Where should you stay?
Whilst it can be tempting to stay in gorgeous hotels along the way, this is going to be incredibly expensive. Perhaps the best ‘solution’ is to stay in Youth Hostels. Yes, I know that hostels have a bit of a bad reputation; however, they are the perfect way to travel. Youth hostels are cheap and they allow you to interact with your fellow travelers. Many people have forged ‘lifelong friendships’ simply by meeting people in youth hostels. You will also be able to get a lot of advice from your travelers about the best experiences in the local area.
If you do not wish to stay in a youth hostel, you could always work as an Au Pair for a few weeks at a time. You will have your food, accommodation, and spending money covered. However, the negative is that you will not be able to travel around all that much.
