Readability is one of the factors that affect search engine optimization a lot. It includes everything from the vocabulary choice, sentence structure to proper grammar. The shorter your sentences, the clearer they are to understand for the visitors. Try to write content in active voice. Don’t write sentence fragments. Make sure your vocabulary is impeccable too. We know writing is a skill and it takes time to develop an expertise. But it should not be difficult if you work on one step at a time. This means you work on your vocabulary first, and then sentence structure. Then you can work on incorporating active voice sentences in your blog posts. Let us begin with the vocabulary and see how you can choose better words in a blog post.

Read, listen and watch

The key to a using great vocabulary is to first have a huge vocabulary set in your mind. The easiest way to expand your vocabulary horizons would be to start reading. The more you read, the more you are exposed to ideas and different ideas are presented in different word picks. It is unlikely that you like to write but not read but if that is the case, you can watch movies instead. Spoken English will add vocabulary to your subconscious automatically. Likewise, listen to music. Follow the lyrics and explore the depths of poetry. It is both fun and hugely rewarding as a blogger.

Create a list

When you are working as a professional blogger, it is likely that you will have one or few niche(s) of your choice. And while reading in general is helpful in improving word choice, you can strategically target content of your niche(s). This means that if you have a blog called catsarelove.com, you are writing about cats a lot and reading or watching other content on cats is more likely to add noteworthy vocabulary to your set than spending that same time reading about cars. You can spot specific phrases and words that you can use and create a list. The list will help you recall a lot of words when you are writing your own blog post.

Count total words

Precision is perhaps the most important thing to consider when making a point. A clear and simple message is a message that is received well. Blog posts that are redundant and verbose don’t grab any attention and easily distract people. Therefore, one of the ways to improve your word pick when working with blogs is to keep an eye on the total word count. As you are writing the content, count total words in the post in intervals. If you think your content has too many words, cut it short by replacing terms like ‘pain in the head’ with ‘headache’. This is one essential tip to note when working with blog posts. Always count total words.

Synonyms to the rescue

This has to be the easiest way to go about improving vocabulary in a blog post. But that comes with a price. As easy as this method is, it is not very reliable. When working on a blog post, if you can’t think of better words to replace with the words that do come to the mind, you can always run a Google search. This means that if, for example, you are writing a blog and the sentence goes ‘I am feeling good’ and the word good seems like too basic, Google should be able to suggest you well as a synonym. However, context is very important when working with synonyms and that is why this technique is not very reliable. If your sentence were to be ‘It was a good day’, replacing good with well would not be the best use of vocabulary.
