“How do you find your purpose?” This is one of the most frequently asked questions! All of us what to know that we matter. We want to have an effect on this world. We want to know that everything we’ve gone through in this life was for something and that some type of legacy will be left. The best way to do this is to walk boldly in your purpose.

I recently came across a wonderful quote by Stephen DeSilva, in his book Money and the Prosperous Soul. “Never diminish your dreams ; instead make sure you present them as gift to your Father. He can’t wait to show you what they are all about and to partner with you in a powerful journey toward their fulfillment.”

I found this very exciting! Why?

It begins with our dreams . I don’t think Mr. DeSilva is necessarily being literal as in our sleep dreams (if so I’m in trouble since I NEVER remember mine!). No, I think he means those things we long for and deeply desire.

The problem lies in not taking enough time to pay attention to these. As kids it’s easy. We dream about life as an adult. “I’m going to be a _____”. “I’m going to have ____ kids”. “I’m going to drive _____ car”. The list is endless! But as adults, a lot of times we get so caught up in the day to day that we forget to dream!

Next we’re told to take those dreams and present them as a gift to God. Psalm 37:4 explains this another way, “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” We have to remember where those dreams came from! They aren’t there by accident!

If we try to step out and make our dreams happen on our own without acknowledging who gave them to us in the first place, we make a mess of things. We see this happen all the time with celebrities, who are full of talent, but wind up with broken relationships, drug addiction and ruined lives. Our ego takes over and we lose sight of the entire point of the original dream.

This step helps keep us grounded in truth and humble to seeing God’s hand in the dream and a willingness to be led by Him moving forward.

The final part of the quote lets us know we don’t have to figure it all out on our own! It’s not just our own journey. We’ve been given these dreams so that we can make an impact in the world. That can get a little overwhelming to think about. How do I do this? How do I know which way to go? Yikes!

What this last sentence tells us, is that once we acknowledge our dreams, and offer them to the Lord, He comes beside us and directs in all the “how’s”. He knows exactly the best route! We just have to be patient and following His lead.

So, how do you find your purpose? It’s as easy as 1,2,3

1. Slow down enough to recognize what your dreams are
2. Ask God to join you in fulfilling them
3. Wait on Him to guide you in the right direction.

What’s one dream you’ve been holding onto, wondering what to do with?
