Concentrated fish oil supplements have enormous health benefits. They can balance blood lipid profiles by lowering triglycerides and bad cholesterol, while at the same time increasing good cholesterol. They can decrease homocysteine levels. They can decrease dangerous eicosanoids and C-reactive protein that cause inflammation and heart disease .

Concentrated fish oil can also improve brain function, eliminate ADHD symptoms, protect from prostate and breast cancers and prevent atherosclerosis and strokes.

But do these supplements have side effects? The answer is simple. If you buy a top-quality product made from one of the world's best manufacturers, then there are no side effects except perhaps for a little extra burping. Fish oil is a fat, after all. As a matter of fact, according to Swedish researchers who studied the diet of our ancestors, nature intended us to eat about 20 times more EPA and DHA polyunsaturated fatty acids than we do today, which is why getting the levels back to where they ought to be has so many health benefits. We keep eating foods but we never give our bodies what they need.

Fish oil side effects only arise with low-quality products. The most dangerous of these side effects is toxicity due to possible heavy-metal content in the products. Omega 3 fish-based supplements are made by extracting the healthy omega 3 fatty acids from fish caught in the seas and oceans. Many areas of the world's waterways are now contaminated with mercury, other toxic heavy metals such as arsenic and cadmium, PCB's and other industrial chemicals.

For this reason, the most important thing you can do is to research properly the origin of various omega 3 supplements. Many companies are in this business only for the money and do not respect their customers. You must make sure that when buying an omega 3 product that the manufacturer sources their fish from the world's cleanest seas and that there be an independent analysis of the contents of the capsules, proving that there is no contamination in the product.

A second thing to keep in mind is that omega 3 fatty acids are fragile and can easily become rancid. In order to avoid rancidity, the oil must be encapsulated with natural tocopherols (vitamin E) in a dark container and free of light. This will keep the product fresh.

Personally, after many years of research and over three years of taking fish oil daily, I have settled on a product that is sourced from the Southern Ocean of New Zealand, one of the cleanest aquatic environments in the world today. This product comes with an independent certificate of analysis proving that the product is clean and free of toxic poisons. It is one of the few products that I can recommend wholeheartedly for everyone.
